3.0 out of 5 stars Luscious love story - Galen is a boost for self-esteem
As a fan of Beverly Jenkins, I found Indigo less exicting and adventuresome than 'Night Song' or 'Topaz', possibly because of the setting. 'Indigo', so named after Hester's dye colored hands acquired during her enslavement, is set in my home state of Michigan, in an African American community consisting of freedman and escaped slaves. The majority of the community...

I do not normally read historical romances. I was selecting books from a book club, saw the Black characters on the cover and decided to give it try. I was amazed at the how vivid the characters were and how they seemed to almost jump off the page. More importantly, I WAS AMAZED THAT BEVERLY WROTE BOOKS ABOUT STRONG, SENSITIVE, GOOD BLACK MEN!!!!! I had never read a book that painted Black men in a such a positive light.

Not only is Galen stunningly handsome, but he truly loves Hester and spares no expense at showing her so. He is well read, wealthy, and has impeccable manners. I also like the fact that Hester is one of our darker skinned beauties. Therefore, smashing the horrible myth that Black is only beautiful if lighter in color.

I have since read each and every book Beverly Jenkins has written and they are all fabulous. Indigo is my favorite followed closely by Through the storm, a completely separate story, however, the characters were introduced in Indigo. I love the way she entertwines more than one story, and a large piece of African American history as well.

KEEP WRITING YOUR WONDERFUL BOOK BEVERLY!!! I HAVE INTRODUCED SO MANY OF MY FRIENDS, BOTH MALE AND FEMALE, TO YOUR WONDERFUL STYLE OF WRITING!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beverly Jenkins is the only romance writer I read, February 17, 2001

Before Beverly Jenkins I didn't read romance novels. My experience had been suffering through several really bad, corny books to find a good one, or at least decent one. I was talked into trying one of Beverly Jenkins' books by a friend who even got me the book because I refused to waste my money. And what a wonderful, and exciting treat. I first read Vivid. I returned my friends copy and bought my own. And I have read all of Ms. Jenkin's books. I love the way she takes a background or supporting character from one book and tells their story in another. Her work is exceptional. She even gives a list of resources, at the end of each book, where the reader can find more information about black history of time period in her book. After much debating, my sister and I decided Indigo is our favorite. Through the Storm is also #1 because it's the life story of Galen's best friend, the main male characters in Indigo. Vivid, Nightsong,Topaz and Always and Forever would be my second favorites. I just can't choose. The thing I love most about her books is, unlike many Black, Books, Music, Movies, etc., she portrays black people as the intelligent, industrious, complex people we are instead of the stereotypical, crying over a man, can't find a job, somebody is cheating, self hating, loud and wrong images we constantly see. Those of us that don't relate to those negative images have a hard time finding stories that we do relate to about educated, or not, career minded, black, people in love relationships that are just dealing with life's problems and success, ups and downs. I love this author and can't wait for the next book. Any movie deals in the works for one of these fabulous stories?

5.0 out of 5 stars HAUNTINGLY BEAUTIFUL, December 20, 2000

Before reading Beverly Jenkins, I was a snob when it came to Romance Novels. Wouldn't entertain the thought of reading one. Now she has a fan for life. I've read all her other novels with the exception of Vivid, which I cannot find, so my expectations are pretty high. Indigo surpasses them all. Long after you've removed the book mark and closed the back cover this story will haunt you. The thing that makes Beverly so great is a combination of lyrical writing(the dialog between character is witty and the word-play between lovers is both spirited and lusty), incredible storylines, and characters that live and breath.

Hester Wyatt (Indigo) is the type of woman, we all strive to be, strong, honorable, intelligent and committed to causes she believes in. Galen Vachon is her soulmate, he is without a doubt the most handsome, determined and passionate character ever. Together they find love, discover passion and the rewards of shared commitment.

This is a must read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Not "Just" a Romance Novel, September 8, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Indigo (Paperback)
I have read all of Beverly Jenkins' novels and Indigo is the best novel she has written. All of her books have been enjoyable and educational without feeling like you are in a history class. In Indigo, Ms. Jenkins provides the reader with the ultimate fantasy...Galen is Hester's prince charming. He truly LOVES her. The book takes place during the period in our history of slavery. Ms. Jenkins provides information that some readers may not know about the trials and dangers of the underground railroad. So, Ms. Jenkins is able to entertwine history and romance in a most delightful way! Indigo is more proof that as Ms. Jenkins has said, "What some African-Americans know about their history is that we were slaves and then there was Martin Luther King, Jr." African-Americans have a lot of history that exist between those two time periods and a lot of romance as well. Beverly Jenkins' ability to formulate an excellant historical romance novel dealing with African-American issues is fantastic!

You will enjoy this book...the ultimate fantasy of love...a Prince Charming.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a History Lesson, June 13, 2000

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Indigo (Paperback)
Hester Wyatt loved helping slaves become free. She would allow them to stay below her home. She came across a man that was seriously injured. She later found out that he was the Black Daniel. A man who also helped the cause for slaves.

Galen Vachon was healed by a woman with hands of Indigo. He came to really care for Hester who he affectionately named Indigo. He wanted to share everything with her. Hester didn't want all the expensive things Galen was use to. She was always overcome when he gave her expensive gifts.

Slaves had a very hard time and when the people ended up in a territory where they were free, there were still people who wanted to put them back into slavery.

Ms. Jenkins gives a wonderful history lesson in this book, just as she does in all of her books. When you are done reading her novels, you come away with a wonderful love story as well as a great lesson in Black History.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Ever!!!, September 9, 2002

I absolutely love this book. You could feel the love between Galen and Hester.

He loved her sooo much, he was her friend, lover, protector, and teacher.

If I could find a man to love me that much mentally and physically, I swear I would be happy living in a shack for the rest of my life as long as I had that man by my side.

When Galen found Hesters mother that topped off the whole story. If you never read any of this authors work please, please read INDIGO!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Love For All Time, March 23, 2000
By
Lisa (San Francisco, Ca) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Indigo (Paperback)
This book is the most beautifully written romantic love story I have ever read. From the characters (Galen and La Petite Indigo), to the storyline and setting, this books was "TOPS". The story had me hooked from the very beginning. Once I started reading it I couldn't put it down. The love that was expressed had me wishing that I could find my own "Black Daniel". He fell in love with the beautiful Indigo and was determined to show her and everyone else how much she meant to him. I loved this story so much I've read it about 4-5 times. Ms. Jenkins really does a wonderful job when it comes to researching her books. I have read all of her books and she has done a terrific job on every one of them. My other favorite is "Topaz". This was another beautiful love story. I can hardly wait for her next book to come out even before I've finished reading the current one. Beverly Jenkins books are a "must read".

I can't begin to put into words how much I enjoyed this book. It was educational and gave me a new found respect for those who worked "the road". Galen just makes my heart swell as he becomes entranced w/La Petite Indigo. Her character is humble, hardworking and will inspire you with her die hard efforts to support those suffering from the horrors of slavery.

You will absolutely love this book...

5.0 out of 5 stars Get This On Your Bookshelf!, September 20, 2001
This review is from: Indigo (Paperback)
After thoroughly enjoying my first novel by Beverly Jenkins I was immediately hungry for more. "Indigo" hit the spot.
(And "Topaz" and "Through The Storm" too!)
I originally read the book a few years ago, and am now falling in love with Hester and Galeno all over again. I'd forgotten how their passion burns up the pages! I just love the teasing (and tenderness) as Galen helps to bring out the woman in Hester. Considering the extreme challenges people of "the race" faced in those days it is hard to imagine that a love like theirs truly existed. But as they fought hard for equality they didn't forget the importance of playing hard at love. The wonderful mix of romance and historical fact (did I mention romance?) make this, and all of Ms. Beverly's books I've read so far, an excellent read. Can't wait to get my hands on the rest!

4.0 out of 5 stars Left me wanting to know more. . ., April 30, 2005

Nedine (Between here and there) - See all my reviews

Independent, strong-willed, courageous and naive, Hester was the epitome of a strong women. Charming, intelligent, handsome, not to mention, wealthy, Galen was every woman's dream. Hailing from different backgrounds, the two seemed like a very unlikely couple, but the heat between them was so intense that it left me wondering where are the real-life Galen's? The cliff hanger at the end of the book made me just shake my head, because I have to read the next one in the series to know what happens next! Once again, kudos to Ms. Jenkins for a job well-done! She captures the imagery and details of the time period and crafts a wonderful tale out of our history.
