5.0 out of 5 stars Here's a surprise for ya'll: Even conservatives can like the Indigo Girls!
I am a huge fan of the Indigo Girls. And I'll stick by my opinion that Amy Ray and Emily Saliers are the best American songwriters today. Therefore, I had been anxiously awaiting the release of "Live at the Roxy", their latest DVD concert release. skimpy packaging.....it comes in a card board case, which is not what I paid for....I feel that if I'm going to spend as much money as I did, than I want the full shabang.....hard plastic cover provides much more protection for my dvd's than cardboard.....Have The Girls considered DVD's get scratched easily during delivery? No. Apparently not....because I checked for...

I am a huge fan of the Indigo Girls. And I'll stick by my opinion that Amy Ray and Emily Saliers are the best American songwriters today. Therefore, I had been anxiously awaiting the release of "Live at the Roxy", their latest DVD concert release. I watched it last night on my wide screen TV and with the sound turned up satisfactorily loud. I have to say, the whole experience was like being there! The picture quality is crisp and excellent, and the sound is downright perfect. If you are also a fan, then this is the definitive concert release that you must own.

The set list starts out with a number of acoustic versions of their songs. I was particularly happy to hear the songs "Run", "World Falls" (which is my favorite IG song of all-time) and "Money Made You Mean". Early on in the concert, Brandi Carlile joins the girls on stage to add backup vocals. Note: As a special treat later on, you get to hear what Brandi sounds like when she performs one of her songs "Cannonball", and the girls take their turn on backup. I did notice that like their latest albums, the songs seem to alternate between Amy and Emily on lead vocals. No problem with that. They each have their own distinctive quality that makes each of them an outstanding performer.

Things start to rock when Three5Human joins the stage (Brandi Carlile remains as well) and the set list turns more electric. I like the acoustic stuff, but I also like it when the electric guitars come out. From this point on, the build up of energy continues all the way through the end of the show. The versions of "Closer to Fine" and "Tether" are absolutely awesome! The Bob Dylan cover, "Don't Think Twice" was also outstanding.

What can I say? This is one good show!

I try as an avid fan to be objective, but frankly this is difficult because music always affects me at a visceral level that is hard to codify in words. One can't deny however that Amy and Emily's ability to captivate a legion of fans through two generations (29 years if you count the first time they played together as an underage bar band), and to continue to attract top accompanying artists such as Brandi Carlile, attests to the incredible talent of this duo. Amy and Emily have always delivered performances that are nothing short of phenomenal, and "Live at the Roxy" is testimony to this. I was disappointed however that more of the concert was not included -- songs that are in Amazon's advertised set list. For example, Emily's song, "Trouble", and Amy's "Tried to be True" and "Kid Fears", were omitted. Nevertheless much is here to savor. Tomi Martin and Tres Gilbert with Three5Human adeptly provide guitar licks for an electrified rendition of Amy's "Tether". Brandi Carlile joins Amy and Emily in a poignant version of "Hope Alone", and Brandi sings "Cannonball", a song from her own repertoire, with Amy and Emily. Then to top things off, Amy blows us away with her awe-inspiring mandolin solo, "Let It Ring". When Brandi lends her clarion voice with Amy and Emily's in Dylan's "Don't Think Twice" it's hard to avoid tapping your feet and swaying in sync. I was also glad that "World Falls" was included as its one my favorites in song and message. Of course the standards are sung with the same aplomb as though they were recently penned. "Closer to Fine" gets a soulfully charged contribution from Trina Meade of Three5Human, and at the conclusion of the encore, "Galileo" keeps an already ecstatic crowd on their feet. Anyone who has attended an Indigo Girls concert knows that this resonance with their fans is part of the experience. Hopefully readers can attend an Indigo Girls concert, but if not this DVD is an excellent glimpse into the magic of their live performance.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's been a long wait for this one., November 7, 2009

Cannot wait to receive this DVD. I was there that night, right in front of Emily. When they play all the popular favorites, the "radio fans" go crazy. There were plenty of new songs sprinkled in (new up to the summer of 2007), and the "real fans" can sing every single line along with them. After a long, hot wait in the line out in the parking lot, and another long wait inside while camera booms practiced panning and raising and zooming and tilting over the audience, people started getting tired, but as soon as the lights went down in this old, dark, standing-only venue, the crowd came to life. It's always a thrill to have the Girls at home, in and around Atlanta, and the electricity from the audience and their connection with this music is sure to be felt while watching this video. Brandi Carlile and Trina Meade enhanced the show with their vocals. I was able to get a few good photos of the activity throughout the evening. I may post a picture if that's possible here. Buy the video, and enjoy IG at their best!

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible, November 30, 2009
This review is from: Indigo Girls: Live at the Roxy (DVD)
Not just because I LOVE the "Girls" but this is one of the best concert video's I've ever seen. It's well produced. You feel like you're either sitting in the front row or on the stage with them. The music is, as usual, phenomenal!! Three5Human joins them for some major jam sessions. Even though we love Sully you do miss the constant guitar changing (which we all know takes some time). I want to buy it for everyone I know but alas... I'm recommending everyone get it! And get it quickly... the prices keep changing here and at another site I've been watching. It's well worth whatever you pay for it but it's a steal right now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great video and audio presentation, October 10, 2010

First off, the product description indicates that this is a full screen 4x3 DVD and as I sit here watching this it sure seems to be a 16x9 DVD. I usually will not buy any DVD that isn't a widescreen production. Took a chance that this one was widescreen by the production date and lucked out that it was.

I can't add much to the other reviews praising this DVD. The Dolby Digital 5.1 track sounds awesome, very discrete instrumental and vocal handling of this mostly acoustical concert. Audience sounds are appropriately and subtlety handled mostly by the surround channels. Acoustical guitars are either front left or right with harmony vocals spread across all three front channels. Individual vocals tend to favor left or right depending on whether Emily or Amy is leading. It is one of the better sounding concert DVDs I have.

Visually, the DVD is crisp and clear as a standard DVD can be. Wish there were more Bluray productions out there. There are very little visual artifacts with the production. It's mostly only noticeable on the finer elements in the picture such as along the strings of the guitars in some scenes. I'm watching this on a 58 inch Samsung plasma and a Sony S560 Bluray player.

Bottom line, this is a worth while addition to my music/concert DVD collection, even if the packaging is not the standard snap casing. If you enjoy the music of the Indigo Girls, this is a recommended buy.

These gals do more with two voices and two acoustic guitars than most bands can muster with megawatts of system and effects. The songs are great and the set includes a cameo from a local Atlanta group joining in a rocking rendition of Midnite Train to Georgia.

This review is from: Indigo Girls: Live at the Roxy (DVD)
The Indigo Girls have been playing for a long time now and they know how to engage an audience. Live at the Roxy is a testament to their chemistry together. They can move an audience to dance in their seats, hold their loved ones close, and get up and rock out. If you're an Indigo Girls fan you won't be disappointed. If this is your first experience with the girls be prepared to be wowed.
