Book Description

November 13, 2007
Indigo is one of the world’s most unusual and breathtaking dyes, and it has fascinated and frustrated artisans since its discovery. No two batches are quite alike, and on top of that, it fades, just like your favorite pair of jeans. Yet this unpredictability is what makes indigo dye unique and beautiful, and now knitters and crocheters are discovering the exciting design possibilities of working with indigo yarn.

Jane and Patrick Gottelier, founders of the Artwork knitwear line, are the designers who first discovered and developed the fashion potential of indigo yarn. Here Jane reveals their trade secrets for working with indigo-dyed yarns, sharing the denim knit and crochet patterns and techniques that have made the Artwork label famous.

Organized according to various locales in Cornwall, England–from the fishing hub of Newlyn to the bustling town of Penzance–Indigo Knits offers more than 25 original patterns that capture the brilliant hues and equally colorful history of Cornwall. Whether it’s a Cornish Knit Frock, a Pirate-Striped Guernsey, or an Artist’s Waistcoat, there are denim designs for everyone. There’s also a section on washing, fading, distressing, and producing unique finishes on indigo knits, so that you can truly get to know this mercurial yarn.

With stories of the inspiration behind Artwork designs, fashion sketches, more than 25 knit and crochet patterns, and gorgeous photographs shot by Patrick Gottelier, Indigo Knits is the ultimate guide to this truly beautiful, truly unique medium.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth waiting for, November 27, 2007
This review is from: Indigo Knits: The Quintessential Guide to Denim Yarn from the Founders of Artwork (Hardcover)
I pre-ordered this book back on 8 July 2007, after reading about it on masondixonknitting.com. Indigo Knits arrived in Australia today and on my first run through cover to cover, the book is everything I hoped it would be. If you happen to be 16 or 60, love the casual chic of denim in its knitted or crochet form, there is a lot to covet between those covers. Although I can't see me making the bikini or mp3 cover for myself, I can see that I do need the Whitby Sweater; the Pirate-Stripe Guernsey; the Newlyn Jacket; the Lady Dona Ruffle Top, and and and.

The abbreviations and techniques section appears comprehensive and includes how-to pictures; there is a section on the yarns used and what to do should you need to substitute. The project index shows a photo of each article and gives the page number.

If you are not into knitting (?) this coffee table book is loaded with gorgeous photography and general information about Penzance. This really is a lovely book.

4.0 out of 5 stars knitting fun, February 10, 2010

This review is from: Indigo Knits: The Quintessential Guide to Denim Yarn from the Founders of Artwork (Hardcover)
This book has some techniques for yarn that will probably not be found in other books; such as bleaching, distressing, and then knitting yarns into faded looking garments. Pretty cool. Some fun projects, too.
