Dark Melancholy... with a Vengeance,
By rue_morgue (California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Indigo (Audio CD)
This seductive collection of deep, mood-provoking music is quite possibly my favorite album of all time. Through his trademark use of synths, Patrick O'Hearn evokes a sonic underworld unmatched by any artist on the New Age scene today. Each song carries its own unique texture -- the climactic Ringmaster's Dream twists a what would be a light circus-theme into something truly foreboding. And the opening track, Devil's Lake, carries a kind of inspired beauty through the darkness it describes.Foolishly, I had purchased the cassette copy some years ago instead of the cd. After procrastinating about upgrading, I finally condeded, only to find the cd was no longer available. This re-release from One Way is a treat indeed, and I would recommend the title to anyone.

Chilling, Frightening, yet peaceful,
This review is from: Indigo (Audio CD)
This is one of P.O.'s most brilliant magical landmark albums to date. This is a complete departure from the sunny daytime feel of El Dorado and Rivers Gonna Rise. This is a very dark and more midievel sounding recoed that shatters new grounds in his music and is one of his strongest albums to date. Devils Lake is a very scary sounding song with echoing pianos and a very ominous sound. At 3:56 some electronic percussion and some rhythm comes in giving a feel of traveling through space towards a glowing cluster of stars. Sacrifice is a haunting track with very dark tingling synths for about the first 3 and a half minutes. At about 2:40 drums come in and real add on to the song. The horns are beatiful. When I close my eyes when listening to this song I could imagine being out in the forest in the dead of night and then all of a sudden a green glowing, wide-eyed warrior ghost on a chariot coming out of the background being pulled by horses. Coba is beyond what words can say alone. It's a very frightening song with echoing drums and very nighttime synths. I love the intense bridge with strong synths from 2:18 to 3:00. It then ends with the ambient synths continuing. This is my favorite song on this album. Upon The Wings Of Night is what the title says. It's a most ambient song with trumpets but they really sound great.Sacret Heart is another beautiful but a tad bit brighter but still dark and spacey. The Beauty Within is another beatiful but with echoing pianos but at the last 30 seconds the pianos give away to pulsating synths and fade out. What an amazing song. Desire is absolutely magical. It starts out with dazzling synths. Then some drums come in. This is one of the best songs on this album. Ringmasters Dream is very unique. It starts off as an ambient track but then later it gradually morphs into a sort of orchestraesque song and then fades into carnival sounds at the ending. Espana is a truly magical closing track to this CD. It a very peaceful with a truly melancholy feel. A great closer to this CD. This is one of Mr. O'Hearns strongest albums to date. It's so much different from his earlier works and paved the way for his more midievel sounding material works afterwards. This is an essential recoeding for fans of Patrick O'Hearn and all New Age lovers.

Dark, Deep & Mysterious!!!,

I've owned this disc since it was released in the early 90's and have listened to it many, many times. This work is truly a masterpiece and certainly one of Patrick's best. This recording brings you to a dark mysterious place in your soul where few people dare to go. O'hearn uses a menagerie of new age tools to craft this leaden sculpture. If you like to immerse yourself in to a recording, allowing it to draw you in completely, then this one is for you. But be patient, this audible landscape grows more & more enticing w/ each listen. As you become familiar w/ it's immediate enviornment, you will begin to discover Indigo's subtle, textural, hidden layers. So turn off the lights, light a candle and prepare yourself for a deep, dark mystical journey into a gothic realm.

Excellent,

This is in my opinion the best Patrick's work. Here he reaches maturity and a well developed music structure, with themes that are profound, and very sensitive. Patrick show us how excellent could be his work and the fact that his experience and maturity finally achieves an outstanding level. This album should be keeped in your home, close to Mark Isham's "Castalia", Path Metheny Group's "First Circle", David Sylvian's "Gone to earth", and Bill Bruford's "Earth Works". If you are going to listen to the samples mentioned above, try the fourth track, where Mark Isham plays his trumpet. Then you will surelly agreed with my opinion. Enjoy this good music...

Lovely mellow jazzy new-age,

When you first get a Patrick album, the songs sound nice, but you don't love them immediately. You have to listen to each album every day for 2 weeks to fall in love with a few of the songs. I would call the style "Experimental Jazz-based New Age." Similar to Tangerine Dream, but the sounds here are not so exotic. Almost the whole album is good -- but this album contains the one and only Patrick song I really don't like, "Ringmaster's Dream." It has a circus-y pounding hurdy-gurdy organ sound to it that gives me a headache. HOWEVER, "Sacred Heart" is superb, "Desire" and "Sacrifice" are excellent, "Coba" boogies, and "Espana" is lovely. The best 2 other Patrick albums are Metaphor and Eldorado. If you love this album, try some Tangerine Dream!

One of O'Hearns best...,

... and that is saying a lot. Indigo is, in my opinion, second only to River's Gonna Rise (which, strangely, isn't available on amazon.com). The album is different from other O'Hearn albums in that it focuses on synth and ambience much more than any other work he's done. Plus, it's a good deal darker than his other albums. Great if you are smoking marijuana or reading a book. My favorite tracks on Indigo are: Ringmaster's Dream (a dark, twisted take on the carnival theme); Devils Lake (very ambient); Upon the Wings of Night (another ambient track, great trumpet work); and Sacrafice (borderline "horror" song, but gets brighter towards the end). All of the songs are great, however. If you are just starting to listen to O'Hearn, Indigo is an excellent introduction to his work.

...this is by far O'Hearn's best. Apparently he re-released all of his early recordings on May 9, 2000 but Ancient Dreams, Between Two Worlds and the like are from a much earlier time in O'Hearn's career. And the very best of his work "River's Gonna Rise" is not even available at Amazon for some reason. It would be a shame if it's out of print because it was an excellent collection of music. I've been listening to O'Hearn for the better part of 10 years, along with Tangerine Dream and others. If I had to recommend three CD's of Patrick's to buy they would be: 1. River's Gonna Rise (have to get it somewhere else I guess) 2. Indigo 3. Trust

relaxing twilight music,

O'Hearn's first album I have listened was this one. I found it by accident in a sale, and bought it without listening to it. Now I know this is a great album. When I want to relax I just pick this one, and sit in the dark. Those who are looking for relaxing music, or that like to sit in the twilight and enjoy, this should be your choice.Enjoy!!

Dark, Intense, and Dynamic,
By
This review is from: Indigo (Audio CD)
Anyone who has seen the movie "White Sands" and is familiar with "Indigo" will recognize some of the music from "Indigo" featured in this show. After the rather "soft" sound of "Rivers Gonna Rise" and the uniqueness of "Eldorado", "Indigo" is a journey through a dark, beautiful world. Patrick O'Hearns music can inspire visual images that go with some of the songs. "Sacred Heart" for instance, gives me a view of a long journey through a wide expanse of desert. The song "Devil's Lake" sounds like someplace I may not want to be on a dark, moonless night. The music on this CD has a mysterious sound, even compared to O'Hearns previous works. It would probably sound good at a Halloween party, that's not to take anything away from it, it's an excellent work and rates high on the scale of musical precision.

Inside is a Concealed Rip-Off of Chick Corea's 'Crystal Silence' !,
By
This review is from: Indigo (Audio CD)
'The Beauty Within' is but a shameless
rip-off of Chick Corea's classic jazz composition 'Crystal Silence'. It may be a bit more of a shifty dream, but Corea's melody is slowly stated inside the core. Perhaps that's what O'Hearn is saying with his title. I've never seen any credit to the real composer. I doubt it really matters now. It's a statue of limitations issue, perhaps. I don't think this CD will be pressed for sale again, anyway. - WHATEVER !! |
