Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

ea. vol: 115p. photogs. reprods. bibliog. chron. index. (World Leaders Past & Present Series). CIP. Chelsea House. 1987. PLB $16.95. Grade 6-10 Three concisely written and attractive books. The authors present their subjects in fairly broad historical contexts. India's struggle for independence and the pivotal roles played by Indira Ghandi's father, Jawarahal, and her hero Mahatma Ghandi are fully treated in her biography. Butler does a good job of presenting both Mrs. Ghandi's accomplishments and negative acts. Queen Victoria has suffered from myths which portray her as a humorless, prudish woman. This biography does much to dispel those myths. Albert emerges as an astute statesman and loving husband. The biography of Castro details the past and present turmoil in Latin America and the accompanying rivalry between the U.S. and U.S.S.R. is also discussed. Vail sidesteps a definitive assessment of Castro's achievements as it is premature to make such pronouncements. All three books are filled with captioned photos, drawings, and maps. Relevant quotations are also included. These books are appropriate for research, and they would also be possibilities for leisure reading for history buffs. The wide margins and plentiful illustrations belie their sophistication. Deborah Vose, Lake Region High School, Bridgton, Maine

4.0 out of 5 stars Good in pictures, quotes and childhood detail, December 30, 2007
This review is from: Indira Gandhi (World Leaders Past and Present) (Library Binding)
Book is written keeping in mind teenage readers. I picked this book since I wanted to know what outside of India world think about her. It certainly helped me to that end. This book contains quite a good number of photographs, interesting quotes and detail of her childhood and career in politics in neutral tone. However in the end author becomes judgmental and passes a judgement with which fan of her may not agree. Also, authors affiliation to USA can be sensed when talking about influence Gandhi wielded on Indo-US relationship. I recommend this book who have never known Mrs Gandhi or known her vaguely.
