Anthony Hope (best known for The Prisoner of Zenda) published The Indiscretion Of The Duchess (subtitled "Being a Story Concerning Two Ladies, a Nobleman, and a Necklace") in 1894. This novel is written in the style of one of Hope's previous books, The Dolly Dialogues, forerunner of a whole school of drawing-room comedy. The narrator, Gilbert Aycon, begins his tale: "In accordance with many most excellent precedents, I might begin by claiming the sympathy due to an orphan alone in the world. I might even summon my unguided childhood and the absence of parental training to excuse my faults and extenuate my indiscretions . . ."
