This review is from: Indiscretion (Sonnet Books) (Mass Market Paperback)
Jillian Hunter just seems to get better and better. What makes Indiscretion work so well is the plot structure, which immediately reveals the past relationship between widowed heroine Anne and Patrick Sutherland, fifth Viscount Glengramach.

Queen Victoria sends these two, in the company of Patrick's eccentric aunt, to investigate the death of Anne's uncle - was it murder or did he die of natural causes? While determining that is the basis for the story, it does not IN THE LEAST bog down the romantic interplay between Anne and Patrick, or the clever banter with and between secondary characters who are wonderful as well.

Anne wants nothing to do with him and Patrick will do anything to get her back, even if it means suffering from "housemaid's knee" while pretending to be her butler. This is an incredibly witty farce and is a far more sexual book than others I've read by author Hunter in the past. It's terrific!

5.0 out of 5 stars Ditch the shrink - this book is the ultimate lift-me-up!, April 18, 2000
This review is from: Indiscretion (Sonnet Books) (Mass Market Paperback)
For the ultimate in love, laughter, and tears, look no further. Heck, I insist you whip out your credit card and buy this book now! Heh heh.

Seriously, I have a wonderful time reading "Indiscretion". Wonderfully wicked repartees fly sharp and fast, along with hot hot hot bawdy love scenes and foreplay enough to steam up one's spectacles. And even better, there is enough emotional poignancy to add substance to this wonderfully wicked and witty farce.

Definitely recommended to anyone looking for love and laughter. Forget going to a shrink or binging on ice cream, this book works much much better. Oh, and I'm not the author's mother, by the way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jillian Hunter's Best Novel To Date!, April 11, 2000
This review is from: Indiscretion (Sonnet Books) (Mass Market Paperback)
Like so many romance writers today, in this tale Jillian Hunter crosses the genre lines into mystery without leaving the historical romance field behind. She successfully blends the genres into a fun and exciting adventure for the reader. In my opinion, this is Jillian Hunter's best book to date. The real bonus for the reader is her typical comical interactions between vivid characters. You can actually see yourself or people you know in many of these situations.

The story is of Anne Kerr, who has never gotten over the scandal of a brief affair with Patrick Sutherland before he left to fight with the infantry. She was then quickly married off to his cousin so her parents wouldn't have to deal with the headstrong girl any longer. Seven years later, Patrick and Anne are thrown together by royal decree - they must investigate the mysterious death of an uncle, with the help of Aunt Nellwyn, a widow who has outlasted several husbands but will never overlook a good time.

The story is set at Anne's hunting lodge with Patrick acting as her butler, which in itself brings about many humorous situations. One of the best things that Hunter brings to her books is her vivacious characters and their amusing repartee. She has compelling women and romantic men who always seem to have battles of wits throughout her books.

This tale will have you laughing your way through as you try to figure out who the villain is that killed Uncle Edgar and then on to the last page. Indiscretion should be a definite addition to your list of "must read" books!

1.0 out of 5 stars A Major Disappointment!, July 8, 2004
This review is from: Indiscretion (Sonnet Books) (Mass Market Paperback)
I was looking forward to read this book. It took me a very long time to find it. It turned out to be so bad that I threw the book across the room. The plot about the uncle's death is sadly bad. So Anne and Patrick set out to find the cause of the death. I was fine with that. Anne still hold a grudge agaisnt Patrick after all those years, for what??? She wanted a liasion with him, she got it. She rode to the meeting spot with him, welcomed his touches. Anne complains and whines, if I was Patrick, I would dump her on the spot. And I just don't understand the problem between these two. There's no real chemistry between these two, I was waiting for a big chemistry explodsion somewhere in the middle of the book. However, the more I read it, the more I look for it, the more I was like, get to it! get to it! And it never get to it. It was a very fast read because there wasn't much in it to read slowly. By the end of the book, I was like, come on people! It's just not realistic. I read very good reviews for this book and I just cannot find the goodness that everyone found in it. It's merely my opinion. Read it if you want.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really 4 3/4 stars!, September 27, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Indiscretion (Sonnet Books) (Mass Market Paperback)
If you are one of those romance readers who must have a dark, brooding tale, this book isn't for you. However, if you like a light-hearted story with sexy, funny heroes this one is for you. What I found especially unusual and refreshing about this book is that the characters had a past history and now years later they are pulled together again. I loved the scenes from their previous times and wanted so much for them to get past their past and find the happiness they each deserved. Patrick, the sexy, repentent rogue was so utterly charming that he stole the book. His funny lines were the highlight of the novel for me. If you need a lift or a change from more serious-minded books, this one is definitely a great pick. As they say about acting, comedy is harder than drama and Jillian Hunter has proven her penchant for comedic characters without being flippant or silly. I will definitely be reading this one again for Patrick's observations and comments alone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoy a Wonderful and Funny Indiscretion!, July 1, 2003

Whenever I've picked up a book by Jillian Hunter I know I am not going to be disappointed and "Indiscretion" - is again a testament to that fact. In a nutshell, Anne Kerr was labeled as fast and wild as a young girl. An unhappy home life made her wild and crazy horse rides across the moorlands food for fodder and the gossips had a field day. In a very impetuous moment - and possibly as an act of rebellion she arranged to meet the local noblemens son and `bad boy' Patrick Sutherland, for an afternoon delight! She innocently gave herself and her love thinking that it meant something to him, but for Patrick the loss of his mother and the apparent disdain of his father for his wild ways only spurred his rebellion. He just didn't think beyond that day, although to his credit he told her that should she become pregnant to contact him. He was sent away only to find a few months later that Anne had been married off to his cousin David.

Seven years later, Anne is now a widow whose mourning period has passed. Queen Victoria has summoned her for an audience. Who should she run into but the man who broke her heart - who as it happens has also been summoned for an audience with the queen. Queen Victoria, on the advice of her `advisor' requested that Anne and her cousin by marriage - Patrick - travel to Anne's Scotland estate to investigate the suspicious death of Patrick's Uncle Edgar and naturally, Anne's uncle by marriage. The whispered witty dialog as the plans were made that both Patrick and Anne had going back and forth were simply too, too funny. Patrick was all for the plan - Anne thought it horrendous - until the queen informed them that her `advisor' thought Patrick could travel incognito, so to speak, as none other than Anne's butler! You will just laugh yourself silly over Patrick's portrayal of the most irreverent butler you have ever seen as he tries to romance his way back into Anne's life!

Patrick, as a butler was a stroke of genius, and the numerous and colorful secondary characters, especially Patrick's very feisty, no-nonsense Aunt Nellwyn - who just happened to be Queen Victoria's `advisor' - is a gem. The plot is totally fresh and the flashbacks to Anne and Patrick's one very, very sensual indiscretion was delightful to say the least! Sit back, grab this book and totally enjoy this one very stimulating `indiscretion' !

3.0 out of 5 stars Great Hero but...., June 26, 2000
This review is from: Indiscretion (Sonnet Books) (Mass Market Paperback)
Although Ms Hunter is an auto buy I found this latest book from her to be a bit of disappointment. The heorine is of the sort who whines thru the whole book over an incident that appears in their shared past. An incident she was willingly party to. She seems to want to blame the hero for the whole thing and it is clear to this reader she needed to get over it and move on. Here was a man who adored her, she needed to take the chance; she deserved him and he her. She does eventually get over it but not soon enough for my total enjoyment of the book. This hero however was a delight, the best reason to by this book. Great comic relief, rivals some of today's best commedic contemporary romance authors, ie... SEP. It is hoped that Ms Hunter will return to the style of her earlier works where her heroines were strong. providing a wonderful compliment to their heroes. Although not my favorite of Ms Hunter's body of work, I would reccomend it for the excellent characterization of a hero.

1.0 out of 5 stars Indiscretion, May 12, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Indiscretion (Sonnet Books) (Mass Market Paperback)
I have never read such a stupid book. I have read almost every historical romance novel referring to Scotland and this book was by far worst. I can usually read a book in 2 days. This took me weeks, I had to force myself to finish. Please read the Outlander series, Kilgannon and others along those lines. This was just plain stupid. Who really believes they said "nip it in the bud" in the 1800's. This is a 1999 book wanting to be a historical romance.

1.0 out of 5 stars Was This A Farce?, May 8, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Indiscretion (Sonnet Books) (Mass Market Paperback)
This book was very hard to get into. I kept setting it down and then forcing myself to pick it up later. I should have just stopped reading it, but I paid for it and kept hoping it would turn around and I'd get my money's worth.

So the book opens with Patrick and Anne showing up for a meeting with Queen Victoria. They have a past together and while Patrick would like nothing better than to be together again, Anne is very bitter about the past. Queen Victoria charges them with traveling to Scotland and investigating the rumors surrounding Patrick's uncle's death. They will be accompanied by Patrick's aunt, a loyal adviser to Victoria.

I found it rather ridiculous that an order from the queen was treated as a suggestion. It's decided that Patrick will masquerade as Anne's butler so he can unobtrusively gather information. He decides to treat his post as a joke (and no one seems to care) and make scenes and act in ways no servant possibly would. The fact that anyone believed his story for a second just made me believe that everyone in the book was beyond stupid. Anne was no better. Because she is bitter about her history with Patrick she takes a spiteful delight in making him perform menial tasks for her. I suppose it was meant to be funny, but I didn't think it succeeded.

Moving on to the topic of Anne and Patrick's history... What exactly was she bitter about? In all those flashbacks she never seemed unwilling. Even though both of them made mention of him being a scoundrel for seducing her, that's really not at all how it came across. Also, it was stated that he asked her to wait until he got back. She went along with her arranged marriage but blamed him it because he left, even though he asked her to wait for him. How does that make sense? Why did he humor her and let her be hateful to him throughout the whole book? I have never been so embarrassed for a character that I've read about. Even when she treated him horribly he just kept trying. He flat out admitted that he would go so far as to crawl for her. It was painful to read. Why did they even care about each other anymore? I never got much of a connection between them beyond sex, and even that didn't seem that convincing. I would have expected the flashbacks to be there to show us why the bond they used to have and why they fell in love. Nope, just sex scenes.

Not only was I dissatisfied with the relationship, I was dissatisfied with the murder plot too! The book moved beyond slapstick into farce with that. Who it turned out to be and why it happened and how everyone reacted when they found out was ridiculous. All that effort for that? I finished the book unsure what the point of it all was. I doubt I'll ever search out this author again. Her writing style is not to my taste.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hunter pens another winner!, May 4, 2000

Jillian Hunter has done it again. INDISCRETION has everything I look for in a historical romance. Bawdy humor, sizzling sensuality and wonderful writing.

Heroine Anne Kerr is sharp and witty and adept at keeping hero Patrick at arms length, but not too far. Patrick, a Viscount posing as a butler, is hilarous and endearing. Add a touch of mystery and Scotland and you have a read that's hard to put down until the very last page.
