Product Description

From Children's Software Revue® -- "Subscribe Now!"

This outstanding typing tutorial offers lessons, tests, practice exercises, arcade games and progress reports, all set within a travel theme. As in previous versions, you can begin by taking a pretest, the results of which are used to create a customized lesson plan. Goals are, of course, to increase typing accuracy and speed. You can select your background music (lots of good choices) and pick your travel destination, which further expands the theme. The range of lessons is good- this is a program that both the novice and experienced typist can benefit from. Not a great deal has changed in this version as compared to earlier editions. There is more content, for instance there are now 300 (instead of 200) practice excerpts at the Magazine Stand and there's one more game (making a total of eight) in the Virtual Adventures section. And, you can download more content than ever before from the Internet. The bottom line? This is a very solid program, it works, and it's not dull, either.

Amazon.com Product Description

Typing Instructor Deluxe Edition uses a travel theme, videos, photos, animation, and music to make your learning experience fun and engaging. The program automatically suggests the right lessons and tests for your skill level. Easy-to-follow "next step" recommendations and proven teaching methods such as double key stroking help you master a few keys at a time. Or you can build your own custom typing plan to focus on specific areas you'd like to improve. Along the way, you'll get constant feedback on your progress, with accuracy and words-per-minute (WPM) scores after every lesson and test.

You can also improve your speed and accuracy with eight action-packed games. Suitable for beginning through advanced typists, as well as both kids and adults, the games will sharpen your keyboard and 10-key skills. You can choose from more than 60 selections of music while you learn, or import your own music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Program!, May 6, 2001

I have to confess that if I had read the prior reviews first, I might have missed out on this product. Actually, we have tested every major typing program and, in fact, own quite a few. This particular one though has become a big favorite in my household. This program gives you the choice of doing traditional drills, typing completely customized lessons accompanied by a wide musical selection, or playing one of several arcade-style games. My 11 y.o. son, who up to this point was doing two- fingered typing, achieved 27 wpm the first day he used it. He has played it obsessively all week and is now up to 35 wpm. When he's not playing it, my 15 y.o. daughter, who happens to already be very fast (116 wpm)plays with it. She enjoys the games.

Unlike some other reviewers, we have had no problems either running or installing this program. (We have WindowsME.)

1.0 out of 5 stars Same thing over again - DO NOT BUY, March 29, 2001

Individual did it again - just added a few things to the same product. This product does not warrant the price they are asking. You can buy any of the earlier versions for a lot less and get the same instruction. Individual is careless with their design and product satisfaction. If you don't like the product they will not refund your money in fact they will not even listen to your call, if you can get through to them they will just offer to send you another one of their ... products. I think I have gone through all of their products and am just as disatisfied as when I started. Take it from me - DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT! IT IS A WASTE OF MONEY!

2.0 out of 5 stars Use with caution, March 29, 2001

It's not a bad program. It seems to have good tools to teach one to type. However, it doesn't seem to like Windows Me or Windows 98. Installation seemed to go ok but I received run time errors when starting the program. After reinstalling, the program worked but errors still came up when accessing certain modules. The company's tech support were not very helpful and they wouldn't even consider a refund. They said they are working this issue but nothing's been heard from them yet. The software works on a friend's Windows 95 computer but I'd like to use it on mine. So far, I'm not pleased.
