It really felt good to print off the results of my WPM and hand them to my boss. I am so happy with this program. and now my wife is starting to use it.
The games are entertaining, and the typing drills, skills and tests are efficient. They can be tedious, but you feel yourself getting better throughout the drill. Don't even bother with other programs, this is the one to get!
I found the "Typing Instructor Platinum" software on toptenreviews.com as their #1 rated typing instructional program and ordered it, receiving it just yesterday. I have run through 61 lesson sets and one of the practice games (the Shark thing)from the arcade feature. I have also viewed the video feature on the history of typing and typewriters. For me all this content is just dandy and quite the commitment to the craft of typing on a keyboard.
The lessons are set within a theme of traveling which may be a little hokey for some tastes, but for me I'm just hopping aboard and doing the work (61 lesson sets inside the first 24 hours of possession has been satisfyingly significant work!)and enjoying the little fantasy of getting my passport stamped as I travel in this virtual tour of the world. There are three themes overall which apparently can be changed back and forth at any time while student results and progress is kept on track. There is plenty of instruction including a PDF file to download but I'm not too concerned with the frills, but rather the training within.
I like very much the music menu for the lessons. A continuous loop of music, many style choices in three tempo groups that sound better than generic but apparently are generic nonetheless. These are pre-installed with the software itself and then I see a selection for your own music, but I don't expect I'll load my music into this menu. The provided music menu is really fine for the keyboard workouts and I'm surprised. And thoughtfully, they provide the "NONE" selection on the music menu if that works best for the student.
There's size adjustment for fonts and many color choices for text display identifiers. People like to have choices like that but the default settings are fine by me.
Up to five individuals can log into the software I believe (but for me, it'll be just one) and the results summary keeps track by date and time with WPM and accuracy for lessons done. I think that's great. This can be printed out too. The results are offered in two kinds of charts. I don't know how extensive a record will be recorded for retrieval as it's not a big deal one way or another for me, but it's quite thoughtful. Individual keys that are a problem or not are highlighted and also each hand and each finger for speed and accuracy is given. This stuff is neatsy to behold now as the new software owner, if only novel, but as I bang this software more and more these stats may provide some real practical feedback later.
There's a section called, "How To Type" that advises on posture and hand position, exercises to relax and reduce stress and ideas to advance the skill of typing.
There a "Tour" of the software program and a "Practice Terminal" screen that has the "Arcade" and "Magazines" sections that I think are sideline practice games and actions.
This loaded up NO problem into my computer running Windows7.....or you can run it direct from the disk should you want.
So with a relatively small cost, I've got a most competent lesson plan to follow that will surely alleviate my long time regret to leave Mavis Beacon before I learned to type no-nonsense with real performance.....IF I DO THE WORK OF FOLLOWING THESE LESSONS WITH COMMITMENT! I'm not big on reviewing my purchases, but since this is done by TYPING, I'm doing the work that this topic is all about.
Wish me luck, and I wish you luck with your keyboard efforts. As far as "Typing Instructor Platinum".....I give it all the stars based on my first three hours of working it.
March 4, 2012 follow-up to my initial review:
The program has exceeded all expectations.
My typing skills have improved a great deal but let me assure you there is a long way left to go, not unlike becoming a competent musician.
Speaking of musician, the program's music is indeed BETTER than generic with some pleasing surprises. (at least for me)
The large selection of practice features is also impressive, including many exciting games that get you typing for speed and accuracy to the pressure of a race. It's NOT easy as the games adjust to your lesson/output level so your newly developing skill is well matched.
Don't underestimate the skills of an accomplished typist (which presently I am NOT!).....the program trains in typing mathematical sentences much later in the process as I got a glimpse of what's ahead. I never imagined that.
I can report that I am now pretty much free to type while watching the display (and NOT my fingers) at a mildly slow pace of course, certainly less than the 35 WPM I set and quickly achieve in the lesson activities of which I sometimes exceed 40 WPM.
You set your own WPM goal and the program adjusts the lesson progression to it.
Also, it's amazing that the program keeps an accurate log of all your individual lesson activity, even lessons you may like to repeat. It records accuracy and WPM highs, lows and averages plus date and time of day of each activity.
I've found the path to repeat earlier lessons without restarting the entire lesson process. It's just a great program in my opinion.
This endeavor is working out fine for me and I recommend Typing Instructor Platinum version 21 to you more than I did before!
HEY!!! MARCH 31, 2012 now......I've got almost 700 lesson runs to date.....I am absolutely typing while I watch the screen all the time now (and not my fingers).....I've set my WPM @ 35 and will soon raise that a notch or two.....The travel the world passport theme is fun indeed. Last night I earned the passport stamp for Brazil and now have four total.....the practice games are numerous with a few favorites and most still untried.....lots of yet to discover software content.....and once again the music, it is far better than I earlier stated, surprisingly fine....
I did have a few program "not responding" freeze-ups but it's been infrequent and quite manageable when it does happen and I notice the tendency when the program is running and minimized for many hours unused. As an experienced computer user this is absolutely a non-issue for me. I also consider it may be my computer system's personality in the mix. I recommend Typing Instructor Platinum more than ever.....
The statistics of my lessons have updated and maintained all along. I refer to the stats when I finish. My sessions last between 30 and 90 minutes with 45 minutes about average.
I'm typing the right way almost always and far enough along now that the activity of typing and typing practice is a pleasure and even a meditative experience....if anyone mentoring you has said your practice and results gets easier the longer you do it, you are wise to trust the statement...I'm taking this practice all the way! It's exciting to give you this update.....typing the right way!
May 3, 2012....832 lesson activities...Deeper and deeper into my instruction and I have nothing but a full recommendation still for this software program. After completing the Italy passport stamp which was the most difficult and took the longest time to reach (keys for "colon" and "full quotation mark" and "question mark")at my 35 WPM mark, the program announced the achievement of a printable certificate as a "Touch Typist" which was a very appreciated little surprise. I'm on to the keys for numbers, 3,4,7 and 8 now......
The practice games are more explored now and I have a few favorites and quite a few more still to learn but I think I tried almost all of them at least once. I continue to be delighted with the rather huge music variety, nicely tied into the themes of the games and the passport stamp nations. I now open my lessons with some practice games to get all warmed up. Sometimes I just open the program and play a few rounds of the games and that's it, but I am determined to take the actual lessons all the way.
I newly discovered the large selection of text material provided from the "magazine rack" for typing practice that gets measured and listed in the results record of the user logged on. And, I discovered the neat section where a voice speaks dictation while you type with no text to follow.
It's simply remarkable all this facility for a software program that teaches one how to type. It is not my cause to rate this program against a competitor program, that can be found online produced by people that do such things. For my part, I can assure you that "Typing Instructor Platinum" works for me in terms of results and parallel to that, it works to keep me amused and motivated because it's fun and thoughtful as a training software program. I am done watching my fingers on the keys......how cool to see the words appear as I watch the screen!!
