This book is a "must have" for anyone serious about Nudibranch identification. My wife and I travel quite a bit for scuba diving vacations, and are avid video and digital photographers.

We operate a small dive charter business in Kona Hawaii - Underwater Adventures Hawaii - and as dive professionals, can highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in high quality pictures and great descriptions of each Nudibranch.

This book is pretty much exactly what it says it is - a field guide - to be used for identification purposes. It is not a book that could be used in a class as a text book. There is very little on the biology, physiology, etc. in this book. It is an excellent guide for use in identifying specimens that might be seen on scuba dives or in tidal pools. The pictures are of excellent quality and clarity - each picture has a size, range and other bits of data which might help in identification. All in all, a very good book for puzzling out the genus and species of a particular animal.

A very well done catalog of most - if not close to all - species of nudibranch and related mollusks from the waters of the tropical and subtropical Indo-Pacific. The authors are internationally recognized experts on these animals, and this shows. The book is at the same time a good resource for the interested scuba diver to look up what she saw, a scientific achievement compiling a lot of information on the diversity of a fascinating group of animals, and an aesthetic delight with many impressive photographs of these beautiful slugs.
The book also contains a general introduction to nudibranch biology and a lot of interesting information about the ecology, feeding habits and distribution of many of the individual species.
What is also noteworthy is the high quality of the paper and of the photo reproductions - hence the somewhat high price.

The Gosliner-Behrens-Valdes field guide to sea slugs is a visually beautiful book. The sharp and true-to-color photos are large enough to be useful and are printed on heavy, high quality paper. The book is reputed to contain zero misidentifications, a fact which sets it apart from earlier nudi ID books like those by Coleman and Debellius. There is good, if brief, information about the range and habitat of each species. The introduction is informative and justified by a scholarly bibliography. Unfortunately, some of the book's physical virtues which I have been extolling mean that the volume is too heavy to accompany me on dive trips to the Indo-Pacific. Perhaps I should present a copy to the TemuKira so the book will always be waiting for me on my favorite liveaboard.
