China and Vietnam fought over (and in) Cambodia, over the issue of overseas Chinese in Vietnam, over the border issue, and probably most fundamentally over Vietnam's relationship with Russia. Chronicled and brought to life in Nayan Chanda's Brother Enemy ( LJ 12/15/86), that regional war is here analyzed in a scholarly mode as a problem in Chinese foreign policy analysis. Ross writes tightly and argues clearly, providing the reader with historical background, various possible interpretations, and methodological considerations. Recommended for advanced collections.
