4.0 out of 5 stars Brief, concise overview of Indonesian batik, December 31, 2010
By
This review is from: Indonesian Batik: Processes, Patterns, and Places (Images of Asia) (Hardcover)
It was not until I read this book, Indonesian Batik: Processes, Patterns, and Places, that I realized two things:

1. I'm not sure I've even seen real batik cloth. What I've called batik is screen printing of batik designs.

2. The waxing (canting) of batik designs is incredibly detailed and complex. A piece of fabric may take months to complete.

Author Sylvia Fraser-Lu summarizes batik in this slim (83 pages) volume. The black and white photos are not of the best quality, but the color plates detailing some designs are very nice. You'll learn about the history of batik, the process for creating it, how batik cloth is utilized in dress, the significance of the designs, and the primarily centers of production.
