About the Author

Dr. Pimsleur devoted his life to language teaching and was one of the world's leading experts in applied linguistics. After obtaining his Ph.D. in French from Columbia University, he taught French Phonetics and Phonemics, and supervised the language laboratory at UCLA. He went on to become Professor of Romance Languages and Language Education, and Director of The Listening Center at Ohio State University; Professor of Education and Romance Languages at the State University of New York at Albany; and a Fulbright lecturer at the University of Heidelberg. Dr. Pimsleur was a member of the American Association of Teachers of French (AATF), American Educational Research Association (AERA), Modern Language Association (MLA), and a founding member of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). His many books and articles revolutionized theories of language learning and teaching. After years of experience and research, Dr. Pimsleur developed a new method that is based on two key principles: the Principle of Anticipation and a scientific principle of memory that he called Graduated Interval Recall. This program incorporates both of these principles to provide you with the most simple and effective learning method possible.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but enough bang for the buck, September 19, 2005

This review is from: Indonesian (Compact) [CD] (Audio CD)
I like Pimsleur and I think they are really easy to use. However I found the Pimsleur very formal. For "you" they use Bapa and Ebu. Bapa means Mr and Ebu means Mrs. Only once in 4 months did I ever hear the use of either and that was when they called me Ebu Leveque.

All the Pimsleur programs seem to follow each other. I used Pimsleur Thai as well and Pimsleur Thai lesson 7 is identical tho Pimsleur Indonesian lesson 7. But Bahasa Indonesia is a really easy language. When I would listen to Pimsleur Thai 3 or 4 times before moving on I would listen to Pimsleur Indonesian once before moving on. Unfortunately they could have added a lot more material. I did not feel I got bang for my buck for Pimsleur Indonesian.

Bahasa Indonesia is really easy. There is absolutly no conjugasion of verbs. I would save your money, grab a dictionary, and ask the locals.

Another excellent Pimsleur product. Makes basic conversation simple. Easy lessons to follow. Great repetition drills. Highly recommend.

3.0 out of 5 stars Learning a few words with the right pronunciation, July 4, 2006

It is probably the best method on the market when it is about getting the right pronunciation, however the vocabulary is extremely limited. The price may seem high but if you don't have any Indonesian-speaking friends, the method may be the best way to get to speak correctly. You'll definitely need other methods to expand your vocabulary and learn new sentences.
