5.0 out of 5 stars Highly enjoyable as well as instructive
To call this is a guide makes it sound rather stodgy, don't you think? And this book definitely isn't stodgy. Ms. Curtis speaks with affection and humor. Sure, there is lots of advice here, and much is based on personal experiences detailed by the author.

A word here, and that is that you will find books that give contradicting advice. Veterinarians themselves...

3.0 out of 5 stars Kitty doesn't need to roam
I read this book before adopting our pet from the humane society. It helped me understand that an indoor cat can have a wonderful, happy life, without running around the neighborhood, getting into danger and hunting songbirds.

In fact, they don't need as much space as I thought. our indoor cat is wonderful and well-adjusted.

Good reference, I enjoyed it.

A word here, and that is that you will find books that give contradicting advice. Veterinarians themselves aren't in total agreement. And Ms. Curtis speaks as an experienced cat owner influenced by veterinarians.

The whole spectrum of cat ownership is covered, from how to choose a cat to each aspect of indoor life for the cat. But most importantly, you get a sense of the author's personality and of her very genuine love and concern for animals.

I quite highly recommend this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Calm, No-Nonsense Advice, December 6, 2008

I ordered this book on the recommendation of a cat-expert friend. I found it helpful. The advice was common-sense and realistic. It's a bit dated but this wasn't relevant - cats don't change that much.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great companion book for your indoor companion, March 27, 2008

This is a delightful, informative book, and especially useful and suited to those who keep their cats indoors. I have owned a copy for as many years as my beloved cat has been alive, which is over 15, and have referenced it for his needs as a kitten, and now as a geriatric cat. It has been an invaluable help, and if you have an indoor cat, I highly recommend it. Your little one will appreciate it. Love the photos and the writing style as well. Thanks, Patricia

5.0 out of 5 stars This is an excellent book for the first-time cat owner, October 14, 1999

I read an old copy of Ms. Curtis' original edition of The indoor cat before I adopted my own cats. I had never even thought about whether they should go outside or not...I eventually adopted from a rescue group that stipulated in their contract that I not let my cats out without supervision, and preferably not at all. I was so glad I had read this book, because Ms. Curtis makes it so clear that indoor is best that my philosophies matched the rescue group's, and everyone was happy.

Most of all me, though, because I have two happy healthy, indoor kitties. Thank you, Patricia Curtis.
