Medicore album from a group capable of better,
By Derrick Dunn "The Realest DJ" (Woodbridge,VA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Indrupendence Day (Audio CD)
After an eight year hiatus, Dru Hill returns with their first album in eight and the first album with new member Tao. When I first heard Dru Hill was re reuniting, excitement came into as play as Dru Hill was one of my favorite groups from my high school days, however on their newest CD, the group fails to capture the glory days form their first two albums. First & foremost the group uses the voice coder on every single song which hurts the disc more than it helps. All four members of the group have a natural singing ability and instead of showing off their natural vocal talent the groups tries to keep up with current trends. The first part of the album is filled with secondary Will I Am styled beats that sounded better suited for Justin Bieber or Bruno Mars instead of a group like Dru Hill. The album doesn't really pick up any steam until track 9, State Of Emergency followed by four more slow cuts which are the only real album highlights. Sisqo & Jazz both have a chance to shine on Back To The Future & Love MD, but as whole this is the worst album in Dru Hill's catalog. The CD ends with a filler track where the group covers Tears For Fears Everybody Wants To Rule The World, followed by 3 snippets from Nokio's solo project which shows he needs to keep his day job. If Dru Hill wanted to come back and take the industry by storm they could have, as their isn't one R&B group who is prevalent in R&B today, instead the group digs their career into a deeper obscurity with this disc.

As most people reviewing this release, I have also been a huge Dru Hill fan. I feel this release was rushed more than anything & like most people think this could have been much better. The album starts with it's faster style club tracks which just isn't Dru at it's finest. As the album progresses (Track 9 onwards) the album starts to feel a little more "Dru Hill" so slowing down the beats & singing ballads. I wish I could say I love this album but this has fallen short of expectations & I find myself skipping most tracks to listen too the last half of the album. Although the guys really haven't fallen off to bad as their voices have matured & still have distinct voices. I also feel they could've had much better production as I think all songs are produced by the same person. All in all, this album is, I HATE TO SAY IT. Average! Still worth the buy for any Dru Hill fan adding to their collection.

Awful CD...wish I hadnt paid full price for it. Everyone needs to evolve but DRU HILL needs to go back to the R&B they are known for. Album was weak didnt keep my interest. I skipped mostly all songs except for 1. Please do not purchase.

I love this album and im pleased to know "Last Dragon" is on the way too! This album takes a harder edge than the previous one's and I like the change in direction. The style reminds me of something Genuwine was doing back in his day. R&B for thugs! Im a true fan so I dont mind the change and im not going to whine over how it's not like the old stuff. Time to move on. I am so glad Dru Hill is back in action. I have no complaints about the album. Love it love it love it!....

Now we got hip hop and R&B back.,
This review is from: Indrupendence Day (Audio CD)
In todays BS ridden music market with tweens tryin to be hardcore, girls tryin to be gangsta, and R&B becoming a distant memory its nice to have a taste of the past with a new mix. Gotta say I havent found that the artist I grew up with in high school have faired very well when they make an album now but Dru Hill does just fine. They always seemed ahead of the curve anyway and if you listen to their last album now it doesnt stand out as old. So this album seems to fit right in with the new sound. A lot of the music gets you movin right away and the remake of an 80's pop song was unexpected but a good look. Bottom line if you like Dru Hill and like 90's and early 2000's music and miss it you will definitely need to pick this up.

Welcome back is all i have to say. We are in a time in music that is completely lacking in the r&b department...well not anymore. This cd is amazing. The classic dru hill harmonies mixed with crazy beats and even a few hidden tracks that bring you back to the old days. Highly recommended album if you yearn for the good days of r&b in the 90's like i do...pick it up!

Excellent CD. My title of the review tells it all. A masterfully composed CD. If you like the group, you have to purchase this CD. Outstanding! Great from the first song to the last song.

If you saw Keith Sweat's platinum house, that explains why the album sounds the way it does. They are NOT A GROUP YET!!! Dru Hill has had its share of issues with each other and I was disappointed to see them behaving the way they did on television. But nonetheless, the album seems to be an attempt to blend their own creative styles together. Sisqo, Nokio, Jazz, and Tao, I believe, could have strong career if they stick to the true R&B that made Dru Hill what they are (or were) in the 90s. "Shut it Down" "Away", "State of Emergency" have potential but "Rule" sounds like something Sean Kingston and T-Pain collaborated on. I hope that Dru Hill takes to heart that they have loyal fans who WANT that Smooth-but-Rough R&B sound that's lacking today. Don't hide behind auto tune/voice coder/techno pop beats, please!!

I love this album!,

Well.....i personally have heard these songs before they were released and could not wait to support my bmore hometown heroes! I love these men! The album is great-----PLEASE DON'T SLEEP on Dru Hill-------plus I cant wait for Sisqo's solo project---it will be fire! TRUST!
I bought Ricky Ross, Drake and Dru all at the same time and this CD stays in my rotation more than anything else! .....you may say they lack that classic DRU appeal but come on people; its 2010! Let them do what they do and support them! They will bounce back! Overall, I am more than satisfied with this album and would say its a MUST HAVE! Sisqo----love him still....Nokio raps are right on time....Jazz iz just pure joy...and Tao.....make me wanna say "oh oh, oh oh....OMG"....DRU is back! Let's pray they keep it going! |
