A limited view of induced responses to herbivory, October 27, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Induced Responses to Herbivory (Interspecific Interactions) (Paperback)
This collection of short-sighted chapters on induction of plant defenses attempts to describe patterns and processes in plant response to insect herbivory. To the credit of the contributors, most of the issues in induced defenses are covered, such as communication between plants, evolution of induced defenses, and agricultural issues. It also includes some defenses that are not traditionally included in studies of induced defense. However, many of the studies described in this book include poorly executed, unrealistic experiments that will do nothing to help our understanding of plant defenses, evolutionary ecology, or sustainable agriculture. This volume, along with several other hastily written books, special features, and regular journal articles, will not stand the test of time.
