5.0 out of 5 stars Hiker's Monopod, May 21, 2010

This review is from: Induro AM25 Alloy 8M Monopod (Black) (Electronics)
I'm not sure how I got along without this monopod for all the miles I've trekked and travelled. At a short 16" compressed and 1.1#, it is about as compact and lightweight as I could find, even vs; carbon fiber models at 2-3 times the price. Adding Induro's TH-S tilthead completed the setup and totaled out at 1.7# and the end results are well worth the additional weight, even for an ultralight hiker like myself.

The monopod itself is extremely sturdy when the "twist locks" are snugged up, despite the 5 section design. The leg locks themselves are much more "gripable" than I had expected, being more protruded in design and of a somewhat "pliable" rubber, resistant to slippage when wet. Even my smaller hands can grasp all 4 locks at once and release them easily for quick extension. Little force is needed to then add tension. The twistlocks make reducing the height a simple and accurate procedure vs: the sudden release and jolt of the snaplocks I'm accustomed to. It's now a pleasure to adjust rather than a pain.

For Reference: The base measures @ 1.650" , the upper/top section @ 1.100" diameter, the lowest leg @ .470" diameter. The legs are listed as @ .062" wall thickness (1.5mm) Overall length is @16" compressed and is @ 18.5" with the Induro TH-S tilthead attached. Full extension places the EVF of my FZ-28 at precisely eye level using the described combination. I'm @ 5'9" tall. The foot itself is rather small @.600" and does not appear to be removable for adding a spiked foot.

A wrist strap is permanently attached and can't fall off or come loose. The foam grip is high quality and seems to be permanently attached. A nice belt holder is included with a tension strap for holding the pod in place. It balanced the assembly well while hiking in moderately rough terrain.

My overall impression should be obvious, I am extremely impressed with the quality and functionality of this device. I try to make my choices wisely, as my uses are specific. I won't carry dead weight for no reason, this is definitely going along.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a 5 star bargain!, June 20, 2011

I purchased this monopod and at the same time won an online "auction" for a Gitzo carbon fiber GM3860C. Comparing the 2, the AM25 is lighter by .38 lb, shorter when collapsed by .93", taller when extended by 4.95", 5 sections instead of 6, and $200 cheaper. Now - the Gitzo is carbon fiber (but still heavier), rated to hold 33 lbs instead of 22 for the AM25, has a large orange aluminum top plate, a great belt/hand strap, but nothing else that I can determine other than bragging rights for being one the most expensive monopods on the planet and perhaps the opportunity to buy spare parts. I prefer the locks on the Induro and the feel of the AM25 over this Gitzo. I added the Manfrotto 234 head and an arca clamp and have a great little monopod that breaks down to 16" + the head. (Not to knock Gitzo - I own an old Gitzo Studex tripod and really like it.) When I did my monopod research, I compared the Manfrotto, Feisol, Giottos, Gitzo, Slik, and Vanguard. Value for $$, you simply cannot beat this Induro. It's a definite 5 star and a real bargain!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Travel Pod, February 27, 2011

This review is from: Induro AM25 Alloy 8M Monopod (Black) (Electronics)
The min. length and price were key factors when purchasing because we are backpacking Costa Rica on a budget. I have a Bogen Monopod that is 4" longer and is unwieldy for backpacking. Gitzo has a very small Monopod also, but spending $200+ on a monopod? Huh? It's just a collapsible stick folks. There were other small ones at the local shop, but they were scrap. This one, however, really feels the part. The twist locks are easy to grip, they hold well. The height is fine with my small ball head on the top. The whole product just feels good. The reversible screw is a nice touch. The sheath that it comes with is actually handy.
