My son received this as a gift. We got to use it one time. It was fun, and we really enjoyed playing while we made ice cream, but it's impossible to take apart. After the ice cream froze the lid practically melded to the ball, so we couldn't dump the salt and ice part. I waited for it all to melt thinking perhaps the cold made it expand or constrict or something...and even when filled with room temperature salt water I still cannot get the lid off. I took out all the screws holding it together to try to take it apart to dump the water, and I still cannot pry the two halves of the ball apart to dump it. I saw a used ice cream ball in goodwill last week, apparently they had the same problem, though they managed to pry the ball apart, the rubber seal that held the pieces together was torn in several places. This is kinda expensive for a one time use novelty.

My son found this product in a store and asked me to buy it. I thought it would be a fun opportunity to teach him a bit about science.

Unfortunately, the product is unnecessarily time consuming and awkward to use. We followed the instructions - mixing all the ingredients and shaking the ball for a good ten minutes. When I opened the ball, most of the ice cream was in liquid form. So, I replenished the ice and rock salt and shook the ball for another ten minutes. When I reopened the ball, still most of the ice cream was in liquid form.

We wound up taking our ice cream mix and pouring it in a container to put in the freezer.

Aside from the product's inability to adequately freeze the ice cream, it was a royal pain trying to remove what solidified inside. I had to remove 6 screws to clean it out.

If the product did a decent job of converting cream or half and half to ice cream, was easy to remove the ice cream, and equally easy to clean, it would be a great product. Unfortunately, it under-delivers on all of these.

I bought this as a gift for my five year old brother, and it was great. He loves craft-like activities, and he loves ice cream. I wasn't sure he would have the attention span to play with the ball for the necessary 20 minutes, but that wasn't a problem. He and his sister had no problem keeping the ball moving for that long. He was happy to share his ice cream with the whole family. This is a great toy for active kids who like to make things.

The only drawback for me was that the ingredients needed to use this were listed inside the package and I didn't want to open it before he did. I found them elsewhere in order to have everything ready for him when he opened it, and I ended up getting the wrong kind of rock salt. So he had to wait a couple of days to use it.

Wasnt sure how this would turn out based on the reviews, but got it as a gift for my niece and nephew. They love playing with it, and they enjoy eating the ice cream - of course. But I was told it uses a lot of ice and takes a long time to make... Although the ice cream is soft, it tastes good. And is not too difficult to clean.

A friend and I went in on this for a Christmas gift; our friend loves it and often times will bring it to the office to make ice-cream for us all. Will be purchasing for my kids (7 & 12)
