My son received this as a gift. We got to use it one time. It was fun, and we really enjoyed playing while we made ice cream, but it's impossible to take apart. After the ice cream froze the lid practically melded to the ball, so we couldn't dump the salt and ice part. I waited for it all to melt thinking perhaps the cold made it expand or constrict or something...and even when filled with room temperature salt water I still cannot get the lid off. I took out all the screws holding it together to try to take it apart to dump the water, and I still cannot pry the two halves of the ball apart to dump it. I saw a used ice cream ball in goodwill last week, apparently they had the same problem, though they managed to pry the ball apart, the rubber seal that held the pieces together was torn in several places. This is kinda expensive for a one time use novelty.

I bought this as a gift for my five year old brother, and it was great. He loves craft-like activities, and he loves ice cream. I wasn't sure he would have the attention span to play with the ball for the necessary 20 minutes, but that wasn't a problem. He and his sister had no problem keeping the ball moving for that long. He was happy to share his ice cream with the whole family. This is a great toy for active kids who like to make things.

The only drawback for me was that the ingredients needed to use this were listed inside the package and I didn't want to open it before he did. I found them elsewhere in order to have everything ready for him when he opened it, and I ended up getting the wrong kind of rock salt. So he had to wait a couple of days to use it.

This makes great ice cream!! We used this and one other ball as an activity with 12 little cousins (ages 4-16) on a family trip and it provided enough small servings for everyone to have at least a cup. The activity was fun and the ice cream turned out creamy and perfect! We found that it might take a little longer to become harder based upon the type of milk product (cream or milk), but it is clearly explained in the instructions how to address with extra playing time and switching out the ice a few times. The only disappointment is that you can't actually kick the ball - it will hurt the foot and potentially break the ball. We shook, rolled, and passed the balls for entertainment and delicious vanilla! If you want to kick - grab the additional enclosure. But we didn't.

Wasnt sure how this would turn out based on the reviews, but got it as a gift for my niece and nephew. They love playing with it, and they enjoy eating the ice cream - of course. But I was told it uses a lot of ice and takes a long time to make... Although the ice cream is soft, it tastes good. And is not too difficult to clean.

My son found this product in a store and asked me to buy it. I thought it would be a fun opportunity to teach him a bit about science.

Unfortunately, the product is unnecessarily time consuming and awkward to use. We followed the instructions - mixing all the ingredients and shaking the ball for a good ten minutes. When I opened the ball, most of the ice cream was in liquid form. So, I replenished the ice and rock salt and shook the ball for another ten minutes. When I reopened the ball, still most of the ice cream was in liquid form.

We wound up taking our ice cream mix and pouring it in a container to put in the freezer.

Aside from the product's inability to adequately freeze the ice cream, it was a royal pain trying to remove what solidified inside. I had to remove 6 screws to clean it out.

If the product did a decent job of converting cream or half and half to ice cream, was easy to remove the ice cream, and equally easy to clean, it would be a great product. Unfortunately, it under-delivers on all of these.

Worst money spent in years!! It worked fine up until the time came to unscrew the top and it was frozen shut. We oiled it, ran it under hot water and let it come to room temp...nothing worked! Skip it and buy an ice cream machine!

Works very well, not sure what the reviewer who claimed to be an engineer did with his, I do not think he is a real engineer, perhaps he played one on tv.because this does indeed freeze icecream well, the size is perfect. lol
This works great, use common sense, it will take awhile to freeze on a super hot day, ie go play with it in the shade!
I have been utilizing my english mastiff to most of the work, I do duct tape the cover so it does not accidently come off during rough play.
Never a leak so far that way.
My only complaint is that I wish it were larger!
Have no fear, with common sense it will not break, do not toss it down steps or play on a concrete surface, or throw it off a roof etc. etc.
