After much research on my ARs, I found many experts and "old soldiers" mentioned that magazines do wear out with use (chuckle) and get dirty. So how best to have them last a long time? Even though relatively inexpensive, a buck is a buck better used for even more expensive (currently) ammo. Years of testing notes that the springs wear out faster loading and unloading, contracting and expanding: using a magazine leaves you little choice. But nearly all felt that storing the magazine full, rather than empty, prolonged the "springiness" of the spring, based on known metal fatigue characteristics, especially with flexible steels. And so, storing full is the best way to keep your mags fully functional. But I wondered about the pressure on the lips of the polymer mag fatiguing over time, a characteristic of plastics, and had read about them slowly wearing out as bullets rub them so that when full, the top round could simply be pushed out inadvertently, or load too quickly (FTL, etc.), causing a jam. Just so happened I was reading about Magpul covers (wondered why they came with one) to keep dirt and dust out of the magazine. The evidence is that they also apply a small amount of back pressure to the lips of the mag, helping to keep them from slowly bending outward over time and wearing from pressure from the spring. Now, I'm no expert at this, but the experts I read over and over supported this, so I decided to get some of these covers for the older Magpuls (yes, I'm partial to them, though I do have some metal and other brands: Gen 2 and MOEs) I'd bought. So now, all are covered. Is this a critical action to take?Read more ›

These covers are excellent, but often way over priced. Search around and find them in batches. You get the better deal.

This is a great product. I really like Magpul. However, I think they (the dust cover) should come with the magazine, as they used to. Having to order the covers separately is a pain. Imagine buying a new car, but you have to go to the tire store before you can drive it off of the lot.

This vendor was quick and delivered quickly.

Magpul should reconsider parting out everything, and selling it separately, why would you want the magazines without the dust cover? Other than this criticism, I do like Magpul's products.

These are the same covers that used to come with the magazine. They work fine as they had before, with the usual excellent Magpul quality. Don't know if this is a way to boost Magpul sales, or if some people really don't want to use them anyway, thus they no longer come with the magazine. Given the small dollar amount, I'm not loosing sleep over it, but wish these simply still just came with the magazine - and I believe the vast majority of users would agree.

Magpul has unfortunately gotten away from including dust covers with their magazines while going up on their prices, but when you have the rep for being best of breed, I suppose you can get away with it...I still order the Gen 2 mags when I find them on sale, and buy these guys separately. These dust/impact covers not only keep dust and debris out of the mags, but press down on the top round, which takes pressure off of the feed lips, preventing them from expanding if stored loaded for long periods. You just take the covers off as part of your normal prep for a mission, so you won't have to deal with them when you are in a hurry for a mag load. They do not fit Gen 3 mags, so are not forward compatible...minus one for that...

I like how these dust covers not only prevent dust, lead, carbon tainted air, etc., from settling in your magazines. They get enough of that as it is. Further, the pressure of these covers on the top round of a loaded, stored magazine takes some of the burden off the polymer feed lips as well. Well worth the small price, in my opinion.

I got a bunch of these in black and FDE for my PMAGS, having read that keeping them loaded, with out the cover, can cause the top to start to separate over time. I hadn't had that happen to me yet, and didn't want to. These fit perfectly, nice and tight, keep the garbage out and the ammo in. Will get more to cover all my mags.
