Book Description

Page-Turning Romantic Suspense Set Against the Backdrop of a Small Mennonite Town

Lizzie Engel is used to running away. At eighteen, she left her Mennonite hometown, her family, and her faith with plans never to return. Five years later, Lizzie finds she'll have to run again. False accusations at her job, a stalker, and a string of anonymous threatening letters have left her with no other options. This time, however, her escape is back to Kingdom, her hometown.

As Lizzie becomes reacquainted with Kingdom, she realizes she may not have left her Mennonite roots and her faith as firmly in the past as she thought. She draws on the support of Noah Housler, an old friend, as she hides out and attempts to plan her next steps.

When it becomes painfully clear that the danger has followed Lizzie to Kingdom, suspicions and tensions run high, and she no longer knows who to trust. With her life and the lives of those she loves at risk, Lizzie will have to run one last time--to a Father whose love is inescapable.

Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

Lizzie Engel is used to running away. At eighteen, she left her Mennonite hometown, Kingdom, Kansas, with plans never to return.

But five years later, the new life she built is falling apart. Lizzie knows she's being followed, and she's certain the same mysterious stranger is behind the threatening letters she's received. Realizing she'll have to run again, the only escape Lizzie can manage is a return to the last place she wants to go.

Once she arrives in Kingdom, Lizzie is confident she'll be safe until she comes up with a new plan. In reacquainting herself with the town and its people--especially her old friend, Noah Housler--she wonders if she judged her hometown and her Mennonite faith too harshly. However, just as she begins to come to terms with her roots, Lizzie is horrified to discover the danger she ran from is closer than ever.

No longer sure who to trust and fearful for her life and the lives of those around her, Lizzie finds she has only one place left to run--to the Father whose love is inescapable.

"Mehl does a remarkable job of showcasing the lifestyle of the Mennonites against the backdrop of a modern mystery as Lizzie revisits her roots and has a chance to heal childhood wounds. Any reader with a difficult past will appreciate the way Mehl gently removes layers of old lies and insecurities, leaving Lizzie whole again while, as in most small-town tales, featuring a cast of colorful and endearing characters along with a few unsavory types. The uniqueness of Mennonite living makes this story a refreshing change from Amish romances and mainstream contemporary suspense." --Booklist

"Mystery and intrigue surround richly detailed characters fighting both for their lives and to right wrongs. Suspenseful without being over the top, this is a story with many twists and turns and will keep readers guessing until the end." -Romantic Times

5.0 out of 5 stars loved this book! July 16, 2012
Lizzie Engel is scared! Someone is watching her, and sending her threatening notes. She has been fired from her job under the accusation of stealing money. All she knows is to run. She ran away from her home in Kingdom Kansas at 18 and now five years later she is running back there. Has she lost her mind, is someone really stalking her? She is sure that in the small rural town of Kingdom, that no one can find her. However returning to Kingdom, brings back hard memories of how she was raised in a harsh, strict home. Her father was an Elder in the Mennonite congregation in Kingdom, and nothing she ever done was good enough for him. Will he allow her to return home?

Unfortunately he does not allow her to return home, but a kind friend steps in and gives her a job and a place to stay, perhaps Lizzie and her young daughter Charity are home for good. Until the man in the orange car shows up and the threatening notes start again. The danger has followed Lizzie to Kingdom. How will she resolve this, is it time to run again?

An awesome book!! I loved this book, I love reading suspense and this totally fits the bill. Nancy Mehl kept me reading till I finished the book. I had a clue who the bad guy was, but there were so many twists in the story, that I was not hundred percent positive I was on the right track. Truly a great suspense story that can keep you guessing! 332 pages US $14.99 5 stars!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read August 1, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Do you love reading suspense books? Well then this is the book for you. I could not hardly wait to get my copy of this 5 star book. I read Nancy's Harmony Trilogy and I loved all three of them so I knew this was going to be a great read. Nancy knows how to suck you in from page one and you will not put the book down until you finish the very last page. My favorite character was Charity, I just loved her obsession with the nice potties in doors. I know that Charity will be your favorite also. I can't wait until book two in the Road to Kingdom series hits my hands. This is a must read.

I was given a copy of this book for my honest review.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exciting Read August 15, 2012
I was hooked from the beginning! "Inescapable" is a suspense filled read. The author is a talented writer and keeps the suspense and twists coming throughout the book...but there is also a love story which is nice. It was a fun book to read! I look forward to more books in this series.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good book but DREADFUL audiobook. April 4, 2014
Verified Purchase
The 3 stars is for the writing--this was a good book. The audio book, however, deserves 0 stars. I have listened to 1000s of audiobooks and this is the worst one ever. The narrator chokes/strangles off a word and then releases it with a laugh or a sigh. It is the most irritating speech pattern and she does it with every single character. She interjects high drama when none exists in the script. I will never listen to another narration by Brooke Sanford Heldman.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Inescapably Good Read Hooked Me! August 23, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
My first Nancy Mehl book and I am now a huge fan! Nancy knows how to wrap your heartstrings around her characters, such as Lizzie and her 6 year old daughter Charity and the town of Kingdom and will keep you guessing what will come next.

Lizzie felt she would never be forgiven by the towns people or her father, an elder in the Mennonite church, for being an unwed mother. So, one night she left the town of Kingdom to make a new home for herself and her daughter Charity in Kansas City. After receiving threatening letters and being stalked, Lizzie begins to think the safest place for her and her daughter, might be the place she never thought she would return to--Kingdom. When Lizzie is falsely accused of stealing from her company and fired, she decides that despite the possible reactions by the people in Kingdom, she needed to do what would be best for her daughter, and return to Kingdom.

Just as Lizzie and Charity are adjusting to their new life back in Kingdom, and begin to feel a sense of forgiveness and security, Lizzie spots the man she had seen stalking her in Kansas City and realizes she and Charity are still not safe. Now what should she do? Should she run away again?

Just as you begin to think that you have things figured out, Nancy Mehl throws in another twist! I loved the way she drew me into the story and I didn't want to put the book down until I was finished. Then I couldn't wait to get the second book, so I could read more about the interesting people, who lived in Kingdom. I will gladly grab any other books written by Ms. Mehl!

My 1st Nancy Mehl read, not the last. Mehl stuffs suspense in this book. Mennonites dining at Cora's Café find only red herrings in this small Christian town. Murder and mayhem abound like it's the core of a metropolis. Big city strife was exactly what protagonist Lizzie ran from. Men and women alike will fall in love with her daughter, Charity. You'll encounter plenty of conflict, as Lizzie tries of protect and hide her child from danger.

Lizzie, the prodigal daughter, is NOT welcomed home by Pa, as per the Biblical story. Why did she think life in Kingdom would be safe--after the abrupt run from town several years ago? Now the single mom carries moral & legal baggage. Readers will forgive Lizzie's indiscretions and fall and fall in love with Charity faster than her fictional grandparents.

A Christian novel showing God is bigger than fundamentalist elders. But would God allow romance into a life filled with so much trouble? Lizzie fiercely angered her dad, but would he kill? A many layered piecing of suspense, not unlike the stitching of a...sure, Mennonite's quilt!
Man-lit alert: the last chapter gets a bit chic-lit `romancie', but then, by that time you've fallen in love with Lizzie and Charity yourself. If I already didn't have the best REAL wife in the world, I'd have married this fictional wayward gal myself.
Author Mehl's no beginner. She knows how to mix murder, suspense, adventure, characters, and romance to Mennonite perfection.
Amish readers will like this.
