5.0 out of 5 stars Lord that's why they call me Wash Jones
Here it is, the debut full-length album from the modern masters of jazz and swing The Squirrel Nut Zippers! Every song is a masterpiece and I must have listened to this album straight through hundreds of times, it's that good.

3.0 out of 5 stars Perennial Favorites Not My Favorite
Although The Inevitable and Hot were awesome, the newest SNZ album Perennial Favorites failed to live up to my expectations. Sure it has good moments, but they aren't a swing band any more. They have only one song "Suits are picking up the bill" which you can dance to. I highly doubt the old big bands had the singer screaming the lyrics. If it wasn't for...

Here it is, the debut full-length album from the modern masters of jazz and swing The Squirrel Nut Zippers! Every song is a masterpiece and I must have listened to this album straight through hundreds of times, it's that good.

"Lovers Lane" is a beautiful, upbeat love song

"Danny Diamond" takes on a more sinister tone, with haunting vocals by Katharine Whalen

"I've Found A New Baby" is a fun mix of jumping percussion and exciting lyrics

"Anything But Love" is another sugar coated confection brought to life by Katharine Whalen

"Good Enough For Grandad" just makes you wanna get up and dance

"Wished For You" shows Whalen's soulful side

"La Grippe" is great, macabre fun

"Lugubrious Whing Whang" is a devilish instrumental

"Club Limbo" is dark and bluesy

"Wash Jones" is my favorite song on the album, poetic and spooky

"You're Drivin' Me Crazy" shows Whalen's range, from Billie Holiday reflective to Betty Boop electric

"Plenty More" is almost a promise to fans of more magic to come as well as a satirical look at kinky sex practices

The Inevitable is an essential album for fans of jazz, talented musicians, and FUN! One of the best albums of the 1990's!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best... period., April 28, 2003
This review is from: Inevitable (Audio CD)
When I started listening to the Zippers (many a year ago) I fell in love with their style and grace -- and was even more impressed by their reimagining of a great old sound. "The Inevitable" is their first wide release, and it still stands as a their best recording to date. This was the wonder-years of the Zippers, before they caught fire with "Hot" and well before the exit of Tom Maxwell. This is their rawest, most un-produced best (and if you think that over-production makes music better... it never does for jazz acts).
This album goes from the ecstatic (Good Enough for Grandad) to the sultry (Danny Diamond) to the just plain amazing (Wash Jones - one of the best recent songs in the "le jazz hot" tradition). If you like what you hear on "Hot" or "Perennial Favorites," then "The Inevitable" will not let you down. Just sit down with a mint julep and prepare for a great album.

This is the Zipper's BEST album! I own them all and this one is definately my favorite one. Nothing can compare with Katharine's vocals on "You're Driving Me Crazy" and "La Grippe" is just CRAZY!!! Buy this CD!

5.0 out of 5 stars easily one of the best cds i've ever heard., October 5, 2003

my first impression of the squirrel nut zippers, the Hot cd, was not an exciting one. i wasn't very into it, and ignored them for quite a while, until i finally heard some bits from this cd. i can't even begin to tell you how much i adore them now. katharine whalen has the most sensuous voice i've heard in years, and "wished for you" is such a gorgeous song that i can never just listen to it once. i always catch myself singing "good enough for granddad" and "you're driving me crazy". this cd is the best of both worlds- a few songs that really stand out, but overall, so well put together that you cannot skip a song. the lyrics are phenomenal, as are the musicians. if you're new to SNZ, i highly recommend you try this one first.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Inevitable Truely Inevitable To Miss Out On, October 17, 2000

In the Squirrel Nut Zipper's album, The Inevitable, the band shows a variety of musical styles. Although the band is more of a swing/jazz/big band group, they use their talents usefully to appeal to a more modern audience. Adding a new spin with banjo, the group transforms the "roaring 20's" into a modern style. Among the many works, "Plenty More" and "Good Enough For Granddad" are the top songs preformed by the Zippers. The band composes both music and vocals to bring the listener to a new level of music appritiation. On the cover of the album, the band is portrayed in a 1920ish setting, with black and white pictures and styling from the era. To listen to this album and not tap your feet is a sin!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars The Inevitable, March 16, 2000

I really like this CD, and if you like swing and jazz you will love it too. I especially like track #4 "Anything But Love" written by Don Raleigh. The vocal is done by the talented Katharine Whalen, and man can she sing. She also sings in "You'reDrivin' Me Crazy" track #11, and has the cutest vocie ever. I give the CD as a whole 4 stars. It's a must have for any collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fresh blossoms of old school seeds., November 28, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Inevitable (Audio CD)
SNZ have revived the jazz that made american jazz what it is. The negative reviews are dissapointing. SNZ is not a swing band, they are a Jazz band. Their sounds come from the likes of those in the early days of jazz, but add the modern twist to it. The numerous talents of all the musicians (key word here!) reflect that of their predecessors. Listening to many of their tunes, then reading the liner notes brings some understanding to why Tom Maxwell always seems to be sweating! Kudos to the band for their variety and talent, it's too bad Don took off. All the SNZ albums are supreme. Two Thumbs UP!

5.0 out of 5 stars funky flashback, August 15, 2003
This review is from: Inevitable (Audio CD)
This CD is so muh fun to listen to. The lyrics are funky, the music is upbeat and you can tell they really have a great time creating their music. Unlike a lot of other modern swing bands, their creations are unique yet very authentic to the era from which they get their inspiration. I love squirrel nut zippers, but this is by far their best. I've owned it for 4 years, and I still play it as regularly as my newer CDs.

5.0 out of 5 stars INEVITABLY THE BEST!!!, February 17, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Inevitable (Audio CD)
Like most I am a big fan of HOT. It was all I ever listened to, but I must say that I've Found a New Baby when I picked up The Inevitable. I now have: HOT, The Inevitable, Perenial Favorites, Christmas Caravan, Sold Out, Roasted Right, the Hell import, and I am prospecting that Stacy Guess album; but I would have to say that The Inevitable is inevitably th best!!!
