Review of the Infancy Gospels of James and Thomas,
By V.J.Perez (San Antonio, Texas) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Infancy Gospels of James and Thomas: With Introduction, Notes, and Original Text Featuring the New Scholars Version Translation (Scholars Bible) (Paperback)
I found the work quite interesting. I focused more on the text rather than the extra notes provided by the author. Based on their length, I can understand one reason why these two works did not qualify for biblical inclusion. In addition, The Infancy Book of Thomas revealed human weakness in a child with devine infinite power and knowledge. Unfortunately a dark immature side was uncovered. Though refreshing it was for myself, I'm sure showing the dark side of an understandingly immature yet omnipotent child did not sit well with the early church. I enjoyed the work and would recommend it to others interested in the subject.

The infancy gospels known as Protoevangelium Iacobi and infancy gospel of Thomas are of crucial interest for any historian of art. From the Chora-Monastery in Constantinople to the Cappella Palatina in Padua we see familiar scenes of the life of the Virgin Mary. Scenes not told in the canonical gospels, but nonetheless alive during all the centuries. This edition comes with the original text in Greek, along with a critical apparatus and is thus a very useful tool for further interpretations.

The book was very enlightening. I did think that the cross references to the Bible to show fact were a bit much. I do feel that had this information been around when the King James Bible was composed there would have probably been some new bible stories.
