Book Description

New Vanguard December 11, 2002
The mortar has proved to be one of the most influential and prevalent infantry support weapons of the 20th century. Throughout the course of World War II many different varieties of this weapon were used by the six main armies of the war: Britain, the USA, the Soviet Union, Germany Italy and Japan. Although the concept of the mortar was similar throughout these armies, calibres and usage varied enormously, dependent upon tactical use and terrain. This title covers all variants from the British 3-in.-equipped 'Heavy Weapon Companies', through to the Soviet12cm mortars, which were incorporated into the Tank Corps for the storming of Berlin in 1945.

2.0 out of 5 stars A nice little book, July 27, 2008
This review is from: Infantry Mortars of World War II (New Vanguard) (Paperback)
A nice intro into mortars, some very nice plate work for the 2 inch and 3 inch mortar but for some reason no plates for the 4 inch mortar which was a bit of a dissapointment. Has some interesting facts and a nice addition to a library.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Decent Book, December 30, 2008

This review is from: Infantry Mortars of World War II (New Vanguard) (Paperback)
This book provides decent coverage of the subject, although I was surprised that coverage of any of the French mortars was somewhat perfunctory, especially in light of the fact that the Brandt designs were adopted by so many other countries. Specific data on the French mortars would have been very useful.

Of all the many types of mortars which were to be used during World War II most of them, if not all, could trace their origins back to a single common design, a simple, yet effective, weapon which had been developed for the British Army for use in the trenches during World War II. Read the first page
