Book Description

Warfare in History February 17, 2000
His detailed analysis of battles provides an important reassessment of the way in which infantry and dismounted cavalry achieved such striking successes. HISTORY This remarkable study confirms (DeVries's) emergence as one of the major scholars of his generation. JOURNAL OF MILITARY HISTORY This study departs from the conventional view of the dominance of cavalry in medieval warfare: its objective is to establish the often decisive importance of infantry. Kelly DeVries employs evidence from first-hand accounts - a major feature of this study - to examine the role of the infantry, and the nature of infantry tactics, in nineteen battles fought in England and Europe between 1302 and 1347, in most of which it was the infantry which secured victory. The battles analysed in detail are: Courtrai Arques Mons-en-Pevele Loudon Hill Kephissos Bannockburn Boroughbridge Cassel Dupplin Moor Halidon Hill Laupen Morlaix Staveren Vottem Crecy Neville's Cross, and the infantry ambushes: Morgarten Auberoche La Roche-Derrien.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Professor DeVries has focused on an intriguing problem, and his detailed analysis of battles provides an important reassessment of the way in which infantry and dismounted cavalry achieved such striking successes. --History

A good - and, at times, an exciting - read... an enjoyable and rewarding study of infantry battle tactics. --English Historical Review

A very useful contribution to our understanding of how war at the end of the middle ages came to be fought. --War in History

5.0 out of 5 stars Insightful Reexamination of Old Sources, January 17, 2002

This review is from: Infantry Warfare in the Early Fourteenth Century: Discipline, Tactics, and Technology (Warfare in History) (Paperback)
Theodor Mommsen once remarked that what historians need is "not more documents, but sturdier shoes." This could be the motto of the author of this work, Kelly DeVries, who is obviously not afraid of getting his shoes muddy as he reexamines old ground. Here he has with obvious relish and great skill tramped over both the old sources and the actual battle sites to come up with a stunning new interpretation of the role of infantry in medieval warfare. Professor DeVries' command of the sources is impressive. His narrative powers, particularly in the chapters focusing on the individual battles, are strong and memorable. Unlike the writings of many of his professional colleagues, Professor DeVries' work is accessible to the non-specialist. This is a first rate treatment of a neglected angle of history.

This is a great book.
Close studies of different battles that took place a long time ago before media!
