Sweet Bird of Truth,
This review is from: Infected (Audio CD)
Sweet Bird of Truth is as hauntingly beautiful now as it was in 1986 when I first heard it. And just as valid today seeing as we're STILL "Above the Gulf of Arabia" in our jets raining death on the Arabs. "We" being the US and our 51st State - the UK. Hear the rest of the album and you'll know what I mean...

The first time I ever heard of The The was when a USA Network show called NIGHTFLIGHT showed 8 videos by The THe promoting INFECTED. The music was full of angst, grit, politics, and sex. I rushed out to buy INFECTED the next day.The album depicts points of views mainly an English point of view of an American Soldier/Businessman/Lover. "Infected" is straight up sex with a rough but steady drum and the idea that love is a deadly disease. "Heartland" is my favorite. Strumming guitar, blues piano and a string orchestra with harmonica. The song is sung by a Brit who is seeing bits of Englad being slowly replaced by Americanism. The subject is imperialism...foisting your culture onto another. Our weopons? Pizza Hut, Pepsi-cola, Levi Jeans.... "Sweet Bird of Truth" is the tale of an American fighter pilot who is about to crash land in the Middle East. Matt sings at his lowest voice and the images in the song are pretty rough. In the video Matt Johnson is a post Armegeddon survivor draped in an American flag. "Slow Train to Dawn" is a duet with Nenah Cherry. Matt again paints the image of a savage American male with lines like "I'm just another western guy with desires I cannot...satisfy". The song starts off sexy but gets a little creepy. "The Mercy Beat" is a great song. No analysis here! Just get in your car, get out of town and blare this song as you drive...it is amazing! A great way to end an album! As an American male, I was a little put off by Matt's depiction of American images. But he makes good points too.... But you have the choice to enjoy this for great rock music or to enjoy it for some interesting lyrics. All in all this was a great album as I was 20 when it came out and was just the right attitude to rock to some angst music! Enjoy!

Soul Mining and Mind Bomb are great albums. Infected is every bit as good. Usually, Matt Johnson fans seem to dislike this CD or put it beneth the others for reasons like the dance club sound of some of the cuts or that his lyrics might not be respectful to some. Well, for those of you with open minds and who don't mind a little club influence (especially if you were in those clubs that would play The The), this is one KILLER CD. The title cut was never my favorite MJ song, but the following songs are all without equal - especially "Mercy Beat." If you don't have it, get it - and listen to EVERY CUT!

Not The The's Best,

Worth listening to if you're a fan... you bet. Their best? In my opinion.. nope. Soul Mining set the standard, and it's great. I really like Dusk too. I think as with most good artists the music progresses, and with Dusk Johnson demonstrates this.

Alrite, i was in my 6th hour and some kids were listening to this band called The The. i thought it was a funny name and we all ran around yelling "The The". then the next day i ran into the store to see if they have any The The albums. i saw one called "Infected" and i thought it was funny. i put it into my cd player and all i heard at the beginning was "infect me with your love" and it scared me. i thought it was some sort of weird disco music. then when i kept on listening on i heard some pretty angry music. i thought it was pretty good. but i didn't like how he sang. so overall the singing is bad, the music is ok, and the name for the band is one of the coolest ever. end of review.

I heard this back about 10 years ago or more, and have been trying to find it since then. The album as a whole paints a great picture of middle America in its ulgliest form. The vocal stylings are, at best, unique but you don't find very many Baritones singing on the radio. The images that are painted with this CD can be disturbing, but they keep you listening. You definitely want to spend time listening to the words, and not just the music. |
