5.0 out of 5 stars Great book!, March 1, 2008
This review is from: Infectious Diseases, Second Edition (EXPERT GUIDE SERIES- AMERICAN COLLEGE OF PHYSICIANS) (Paperback)
As an infectious diseases books fan, this new product of the american college of physician has many positive points that make it one of the best infectious diseases books available:
1) This book is almost a summary of the IDSA guidlines.
2) Edited by Thomas file Who is one of the authers of the Community Acquired pneumonia guidlines by the IDSA.
3) Simple language, and greate balance between the basic knowledge, and the clinical informations.
4) The appendix contains tables covering the suggested etiology of the diseases, and the antibiotic used to treat with updated doses, which you can use as a quick reference.

This book as a mid-size text book that doesn't go too deep in the basics of the microbiology, and immunology but at the same time, it offers the enough informations that allow you to move to the clinical text very smoothly.
As a 3rd year medicine resident who is going for infectious diseases fellowship, I recommend this book for Residents, fellows, internists and may be infectious diseases practitioners who want to review and update their knowledge without going to the long guidlines, or to the huge Mandell infectious diseases textbook.

2.0 out of 5 stars NOT for ID specialists, June 6, 2009
This review is from: Infectious Diseases, Second Edition (EXPERT GUIDE SERIES- AMERICAN COLLEGE OF PHYSICIANS) (Paperback)
I bought this book to try to help review for the ID boards. I brought it with me on an international trip with a list of review topics. The index didn't include the first topic on my list (bacillary angiomatosis), and had nothing on bacillary angiomatosis under bartonella. The index didn't have the second topic on my list (rocky mountain spotted fever), and had almost nothing on ricketsii in general. I tried a broad topic third, cryptococcal meningitis, which they did have 2 pages on, but the information provided was very basic, about the level you'd expect in a general medicine textbook. I wound up leaving the book in Africa with a primary care doctor. Maybe it's okay for primary care doctors, but I would not recommend it to review for the ID boards.

Nothing on ME (CFS), a common and extremely disabling neuroendocrine immune disease known since the 1980s to be associated with multiple viral and bacterial infections including retrovirus infection and b cell lymphomas (and now, of course, associated with XMRV).
