3.0 out of 5 stars Okay, not great
Hmmm...are we still allowed to call it Death n' Roll? Entombed is great because they try to be a rocking metal band, mixing crushing guitars with actual rock rhythms. Wolverine Blues, To Ride..., and Uprising are all great examples of that - 3-4 minute songs, verse-chorus-verse structure, and a little rock n' roll hoochy-coo in the beats. This is a very ironic album. Metallica tried to record Stoner metal, and failed, Entombed gives it a shot and well...Mission accomplished. Inferno is not the skullcrusher that Morning Star is but it is a great album. Inferno has the band slightly angling in the same direction as the last few C.O.C albums and the Black Label Society. "NoboDaddy" is a perfect example, followed up by a straight up thrasher "Young and Dead". The production is different but it works well, drums sounds great, vocals are strong as expected, the guitars are loose, but mixed together they have some great weight, nice bottom end to the whole album. This is a fun ride, it is not a Death metal standard like Morning Star but the core of the Entombed sound is still there. I still expect another Morning Star effort out of Entombed, but this is a good detour. It's got and good beat, I can dance to it... I give it 4 out of 5.

4.0 out of 5 stars great songs, duff production, August 9, 2003
This review is from: Inferno (Audio CD)
When I listened to this in-store I thought, mmmm, waste of £13.However when I got it on my stereo and played for some time with the graphic equalisers I managed to get a decent sound. This is somewhere near to Rising on sound terms but with a few slower sections reminding me of Cathedral, definatley old school.
The songs are great, from the catchy Nobodaddy to the bruising Fix is in. Petrovs vocal talents excel, he's just got a great 60 cigs - a day drawl.
If you can be patient with the poor sound on some tracks they will grow on you. I can't see Entombed fans ranking this as highly as Morning Star, but they have the right to alter their style as have have done before. As long as they stay heavy and write good songs, I couldn't care less. So what if the guitars don't pound your face in quite the same way as Clandestine, they still pound you, one way or another!!

On Morning Star, Entombed went for more straight-up Slayer-style metal, which was great in its own way. "Inferno" seems like a swing back to the Death n' Roll style, but I don't know, something's missing. It's mainly the songs. They aren't really that good - not many hooks and generally pretty unmemorable. The band seems a little off, too. You know those awesome moments when Entombed goes on a monstrous roll like a speeding train headed for a brick wall (think "Eye for an Eye," "Wreckage" and most of Uprising)? That doesn't happen much on this album. The band doesn't really click - it's like they weren't really listening to each other when they were playing or something. The production is pretty blah, too. It's no St. Anger-style disaster, but it's pretty uninspired. There are some nice moments ("That's When I Became A Satanist"), but a lot of the record seems like filler. I give Inferno three stars because I'm sentimental. And hey, it's Entombed, so it's still better than much of the [stuff] that gets passed off as heavy these days. But I'll put it this way: if I updated my "Best o' Entombed" mix today, it would only include one or two songs from Inferno. I'd look elsewhere for my Entombed fix.

5.0 out of 5 stars TOP NOTCH AS ALWAYS, July 8, 2003

This album is an example of fine heavy metal. As usual Entombed switch gears and create something that is different than their previous album. Most people like metal bands to reproduce the sound album over and over again but Entombed always comes out fresh which is the main reason I love this band to begin with. If you liked "Uprising" then you'll love this album but if you're looking for "Clandestine" part2 then you may wanna check the new band from Finland "ChaosBreed" because Entombed are done with that sound. "Retaliation" and "That's when I became a satanist" are the two best.

ENTOMBED RULES ALL!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars freakin good, July 3, 2003

This review is from: Inferno (Audio CD)
the reason most would not like this cd is the lack of heaviness and bad production. BUT that's the friggin point with entombed. I mean instead of overproducing your music going for the heaviest thing out there entombed turns around and writes a damn good basic death metal album with rock influences. I'm talking quality over quantity. I mean you wanna slam the stooges raw power for it's poor production value no I didn't think so. ...

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Songs surpass production value, October 28, 2003
This review is from: Inferno (Audio CD)
The only reason for 4 instead of 5 stars is the somewhat dark sounding production. It's fine on it's own but if you have it in a multi disc changer on random play you'll notice it quite a lot. These new songs kick major a*s though and it's definitely a more "hairy" sound than Morning Star. It's like it was recorded when everybody had a serious hangover :). There is as always with Entombed great variety on the CD of tempos and feel which is always welcome. I tweaked the EQ using my PC and now have a 5 star CD to listen to. I really think even if you don't have the ability to EQ it you'll still like it. I would definitely still be OK with the original sound if I didn't have the ability to adjust it. The Fix is In is my new favorite song from any artist and is just an amazing example of to the point arranging and crafting of powerful yet catchy ideas. I dare you to try not to do your best L-G impersonation when they sing "Heretic at the stake, let the motherf*ck*r bake"....Just Brilliant.

4.0 out of 5 stars Entombed - Inferno, September 16, 2011
This review is from: Inferno (Audio CD)
This is a really fun album; every Entombed album has its own unique flavour and historically fan reaction to Entombed's back catalogue has ranged from `Genre Defining Classic,' to `Dreadful Sell Out.'

Inferno is a really fun album and a real grower, when it was first released I thought that it was good but not essential. Over the years however I always find myself coming back to the album and liking it more and more to the point where it has become one of my favourite Entombed records. While it was certainly not as fast as `Left Hand Path,' or as heavy as its predecessor `Morning Star,' it was brilliant and the songs speak for themselves.

Songs like the rumbling `The Fix Is In,' and the fantastic `That's When I Became A Satanist,' are oozing with macho muscle and adrenaline which is somewhat ironic considering the lyrical content of the amazing 'Flexing Muscles.'

The production isn't crystal clear because of Entombed's tonal choices and preference for the `Sweaty,' and `Grimy,' sounds, as they like to state in interviews and this is definitely one of their grimier records.

As an aside that may not affect everyone but exists on some printings of the album, a strange phenomenon exists where the album (which full of guitar solos) fails to play the solos on certain cd players. For example; on my home stereo this is full of solos, but on my walkman it has none at all. This problem is more or less solved now in the age of mp3s however and shouldn't put you off giving the album a fair try.

Overall; this is a brilliant album from Entmobed; don't expect a rehash of their first few albums, Inferno brings something a little different but equally interesting to the Entombed catalogue. If you are unsure about whether or not the album is for you, check out the groovy `NoboDaddy' as a rough gauge of the album's direction.

3.0 out of 5 stars 3 1/2, February 16, 2006
This review is from: Inferno (Audio CD)
Calling this Entombed album, a Death Metal album is really reaching, yet it doesnt mean that it isnt enjoyable. Entombed has been taking different approaches on every album that they have been doing since "Wolverine Blues" but thats not a bad thing. Even though they have left their roots of death metal long ago, doesnt mean that the newer material should be missed, or criticized for trying to sell out. Trust me when I tell you that Entombed, no matter how water downed, is ever going to get a spot in MTV's regular rotation, or wind up on Pop Hard Rock stations. "Inferno" is probely the strangest album that they have done, and there is actual singing in this record, yet the guitar and drum parts are still very heavy. Its actually reminds me of old-school Venom but with more "Groove" and more singing. It seems like they wanted to make a metal album that had almost a late 70's and early 80's crunch to it, and combined it with some classic entombed melody. Its different, Its strange, yet give it a chance cause it is still some pretty good Metal.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good release marred by crap production, July 6, 2005
By
Chet Fakir (San Francisco) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Inferno (Audio CD)
This isn't death metal by any stretch of the imagination, rather it's ballsy, and grooving stoner metal. The lyrics are in general ironic or humorous, the songs ain't bad either being mostly slowly grooving slabs of distortion, not that there aren't some fast songs. But I couldn't give this any more than three stars because the production is muddy, bass heavy, unclear and ruins what could have otherwise been a very strong release. It sounds like demos rather than a finished product and the band sounds sloppy for it. As other reviewers have stated you'll be messing with your EQ in order to get a good sound, but dammit you shouldn't have to.

5.0 out of 5 stars In the vein of the new Entombed, April 4, 2005
This review is from: Inferno (Audio CD)
This record captures best what I think Entombed has been shooting for since Uprising. Fast, brutal metal while holding on to their sometimes tongue-in-cheek lyrics. I have to admit that I got into Entombed with Uprising and have enjoyed every release since tht record, I can say that I only kind of like their older releases (Wolverine Blues etc.) If you are a fan of Uprising and Morning Star, this record is a little more structured than both, and a little harder than both, but that's totally a good thing.
