Nice, Quiet clock!,

Why is it that all over the web it's hard to be sure if you're getting a quiet clock without a lot of research? Even then you don't really know what you have until you get it. Same thing when you go in a store. I wish there was a universal description for quiet clocks, as in "quiet sweep action" or "very faint tick" or "standard loud tick". It seems like Seikos are quiet, but some aren't too cheap and quite a few don't seem to have the appearance you're looking for when dealing with some room locations.Plus some reviewers aren't helpful because some don't know they're half deaf! Because of what I've done for a living (recording engineer who doesn't use really loud speakers), my hearing and sense of detail is reliable. I can hear a wristwatch alarm in a room almost to the opposite end of the house from where I am. I say all this as I really can't stand listening to "tick tock" while I'm focusing on work, I find it irritatingly distracting. I needed something for my parents' living room with a design that was reasonably appropriate. Sometimes I'm forced to do work near it while I'm over there as other spaces aren't available. This has a black bezel and the face (and back of the clock) is translucent plastic. This means the color of the wall comes through the face in a diffused way. You won't see the wood grain in a cherry stained wood panel, but a somewhat darker cherry stain color will come through. It's important to note that the numerals and hands are silvery, and as such, their visibility will depend on how much light is in the room. They are not "chrome looking", but are like brushed stainless steel. The center "clock works" for the hands are the same deal. In spite of the picture you see, don't think at all that these numerals and hands are white, they are a diffused brushed stainless steel effect. This is important later on in the review. The good news is that you can't hear it tick until you put it within a foot of your head, and even at 3 inches from your ear, it's quieter than a typical loud clock at 30 feet. So this is a winner for me. Size is about 11.5 inches, give or take a half inch, but I'm going by memory for this, and you should go by the description, which was accurate. Explanation later in the review. The clock lies flush with the wall. I highly recommend this clock as one suitable for average spaces and in my case, a living room space, though some people might want something more elegant looking. But good luck hunting down a quiet, elegant clock that you know for a fact is quiet. You find out when you get it. No matter what, this still looks better than a clock from a school wall! Very visible under reasonable light conditions, very quiet. Now, I'll say I had to return it for reasons that had nothing to do with the clock, but you need to read this: My parents have odd rules for where things "have to be located". So this clock was placed on a dark cherry stained wood panel in a corner of the living room where available light and also night time lights are pretty lousy and unreasonable. So what's really needed is strictly a clock with a totally white face and black numerals and hands, and a size of 11 to 13 inches like the loud clock that's still there, awaiting replacement when I get time to do a vast research project for a nice looking quiet clock. I tried a very low watt night light shining on the clock which sort of worked, but I got a bad glare from the curve in the edge of the front clear plastic protective face. I tried lighting it from behind with an odd rig, but still couldn't see the numerals well enough. This would be great in a normally well lit room. I really like the clock's looks and its silence, but couldn't use it in a stupid, dark location.

I like the modern look of the clock and it is very quiet. You have to be within a foot or so of the clock before you can hear the ticking which is what I like in the room I watch TV in.I agree with a previous poster though in that the numbers and hands are hard to read in low lighting because of the frosted backing. I did what that other poster suggested and unscrewed the back of the clock (six phillips head screws) and taped some black construction paper to the back. Now the clock is much easier to read and the frosted backing helps hide the seam between the two pieces of construction paper.
