From the Manufacturer

Incredible sound. Incredible price.

Prepare to raise your expectations. Experience home entertainment at a new level of clarity and realism. From unobtrusive bookshelf systems to dazzlingly powerful home theaters, there's an Infinity Primus speaker that's right for every purpose and room in your home. Most other speaker systems in the Primus price range sound as if they are spraying their sound at you - tinny, hollow and reproduced - a copy of a copy. With its MMD transducer technology and seamless component architecture working in unison to eliminate unwanted resonance modes, the Primus P153BK doesn't spray - it immerses, rolling over the listener with warm, rich sound the way live music does. Pair it with any one of our powerful MMD-equipped floorstanding loudspeakers, subwoofers, and center-channel speakers, and the Infinity Primus P153BK will fill any room with dramatic and well-defined sound. This is where Infinity sound begins, and it's well within your reach.

  • Two-way bookshelf/wall-mount loudspeaker high frequency response
  • 5 1/4" (133mm) MMD low-frequency driver
  • 3/4" (19mm) MMD high-frequency driver
  • Built-in wall mounts
  • Legendary Infinity engineering - speaker components seamlessly work together as an integrated system
  • Extremely low resonance enclosures - hear music exactly as it was recorded
  • Tweeter waveguides improve on-and-off-axis high-frequency response
  • Precision crossover networks
  • Patented MMD transducers significantly improve cone performance, providing ideal rigidity and resistance to precision sound
    across the entire spectrum

  • The P153BK's tweeter delivers crystal clear high frequencies.

Music and Movies as they were meant to be heard.

Patented MMD transducer technology improves sonic accuracy

Derived from our patented CMMD technology, the Metal Matrix Diaphragm (MMD) approach continues the Infinity tradition of using advanced materials to improve sonic accuracy. These diaphragms are much stiffer than standard metal ones - by anodizing both sides of an aluminum core, we're able to significantly improve cone performance and outperform cones made of paper, polypropylene or Kevlar material.

The patented MMD material's sandwich design makes the driver incredibly strong and lightweight.

By virtue of its extreme rigidity and resistance to resonance, the MMD material is far more than just another diaphragm substance. It is an ideal diaphragm material for the ultimate listening experience. Sound propagates at a higher velocity in metals than in materials such as polymers and papers. Sound will travel through MMD material nearly twice as fast as it will through any other cone material - thus, moving unwanted resonances outside the audible range.

Acoustical waveguides deliver wide high-frequency response

Where you sit in a room as you listen to speakers can have just as great an effect on their sound quality as the speakers themselves.

By using an acoustical waveguide, high frequencies have a wide dispersion throughout the room.
To make sure listening to the Primus P153BK is truly a great experience everywhere in the room, they use a proprietary "waveguide" around the tweeter. This waveguide ensures a wide dispersion of the high frequencies throughout the room while keeping them both accurate and natural-sounding. The result is an enveloping, realistic sound experience throughout the entire room, making the P153BK perfect for critical music and movie reproduction.
Low-Resonance enclosures do not change or alter the sound

A great sounding loudspeaker should play just what it's told to without changing or altering the sound. One way that a poorly designed loudspeaker can change the sound is when the enclosure resonates or vibrates. Resonance can change a speaker's overall tonal balance and totally alter the sound of the recording that it plays. To eliminate any enclosure resonance from the P153BK bookshelf speakers, Infinity engineers the enclosure using pinpoint internal bracing that increases rigidity so it does not vibrate or resonate. Bass sounds tight and accurate while the soundstage is smooth and precise. Plus there's the added advantage of a sleek, narrow enclosure that's at home in nearly any room décor.

Superior Infinity® engineering delivers sound perfection

Many loudspeaker manufacturers are actually loudspeaker assemblers, buying parts off the shelf from different companies with the goal of assembling them into a final product. While this might help keep costs down, it gives very little guarantee about how the speakers are going to sound. The Infinity Primus P153BK's speaker drivers, baffles, cabinets and waveguides are all designed and engineered by Infinity to work seamlessly together as an integrated system, fitting together like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. And since Infinity has engineered each piece for the best possible sound quality, the result is a loudspeaker that we can guarantee will dazzle you no matter what you happen to be listening to.

Infinity - Legendary reputation. Uncompromising craftsmanship and sound.

With the Infinity Primus P153BK, you not only experience the cutting edge in high-performance transducer technology and sound reproduction, you experience the cutting edge from the makers of Infinity products - some of the world's most innovative, high-quality audio equipment. The road to the Infinity Primus series is a road lined with dozens of audio milestones: The Infinity Servo Statik 1a - the world's first powered subwoofer. The EMIT (Electromagnetic Induction Tweeter) device. The revolutionary IRS speaker - the world's first "reference" loudspeaker. The Prelude MTS speaker - the world's first powered tower speaker. Since 1968, innovative Infinity technologies, materials and manufacturing techniques have advanced the science of sound, and have set new standards in loudspeaker technology and performance. Infinity Primus Series speakers benefit from every Infinity innovation that has come before. This is where Infinity sound begins, and it's well within your reach.

    -Output Vs. Size
    -Seem solid and well constructed
    -Adequate power handling
-Wall mountable. Front firing bass reflex porting so you can still hang them with the built in mounts.

Cons (even though they aren't truly "cons" per se, but minor situational issues to me):
-A tad deeper than I would like, but by no means unreasonable.
-No hardware (screws/bolts) in the box for the factory wall mounts.

I am by no means an eccentric audiophile but also have had enough experience to say that I'm comfortable putting a tag on them as "a great deal" considering what you pay for them.

These little guys are replacing a slightly larger set of reasonable Yamaha speakers temporarily until I have time to rear wall mount them. The Yamahas have 8" drivers whereas these only have 5 1/4" ones yet the bass output is pretty dang comparable. Obviously bass isn't the only part of a good listening experience but rest assured that the mids/uppers have very good reproduction value. This is also not taking into account of any real break-in time so I suspect that within a week or so (i figure 10-20 hours of use) they will probably sound even better.

I personally could never tolerate these (or pretty much ANY speakers) without a subwoofer to accompany them but I do know several people that would be beyond content with them as mains on a small scale system.

I got these for the insane price of $49.99 each from a promotion on Newegg.com but I will comfortably say that I'd still consider buying them for around $100 each if I needed another set. Obviously I'd PREFER to pay less, and I'm not an ignorant fanboy screaming "you'll NEVER find better ones for the price!!!", but you still get a good bargain overall in the end even at regular pricing.

I'll start with the conclusions first, and follow up with the selection process, which may be of interest to others.

    - Well constructed and attractive with grilles on or off,
    - Dynamic and exciting sound. sound for most music types,
    - Detailed even at low sound levels, good imaging,
    - Personal listening comparison beat out the more expensive Polk RTi4,
    - Available at deep discount,
    - Perfect for rear channels (includes wall mounting eyelets).

    - Weak bass (needs sub to cover under 120Hz),
    - Massed voices (choral) can sound harsh & congested,
    - Fairly deep cabinet (11"), typical of speakers in this class.
    - Not as accurate as I would have liked.

OK, now to how I ended up with these speakers (those readers that only needed the facts can stop reading at this point). Let me emphasize that this was my experience in my office with my electronics. Other listener's experience will vary!

I passed along my office receiver and speakers to my son when he moved recently. So of course I had to start shopping for something new (and better!). I use the stereo-only setup with my computer. But I did not consider typical 2.1 computer speakers since I wanted to retain the multiple inputs and FM tuner that a receiver provides. Computer speakers are usually built for convenience, and to minimize footprint, rather than for sound quality.

Since I do some critical listening and occasional amateur "re-mastering", I need reasonably accurate speakers. I did a pretty thorough job of scouring the marketplace for quality bookshelf speakers under $300/pr. Needing to limit size somewhat, the 5" 2-way designs were about as large as I could take, even though I would have preferred a 6" or even 8" 2-way.

good sound and not any problems

Running with Infinity Primus 2x P363, 2x PS38, 2x P153 2x P163BX 1x PC351. Powered by a Sony 7.2 system. Good sound yet not as loud as one would think meaning you just need to turn it up more so I cant truly consider that a reason to mark it down.

Decided to upgrade my office and wanted a decent set of bookshelf speakers for listening to music as well as my TV. I took the advice of others and purchased a subwoofer to get better base and lows. I got a Yamaha for only $89.00 here on Amazon. The speakers work as I expected, nice clean, crisp and clear sound. This is my second set of Infinity Primus speakers and nice again they did not disappoint.

I bought these to be the front Left and Right speakers in my 7.1 home theater. I consider myself a bit of an audiophile, but I also build my systems on a budget with an emphasis on value. These are slightly bigger than I expected (not a bad thing), and they work great. Not sure you can do much better for the price. You can buy these with confidence, but obviously you will want a sub-woofer with them as they can't handle low end bass. If you aren't that picky about your music you may be happy with these as stand alone bookshelf speakers for music...but they would leave me wanting there.

I had to replace a 15 year old pair of Infinity Entra Two floor speakers because we built a huge wall unit for our home entertainment system, and floor speakers would have been completely out of place. I needed bookshelf speakers to sit on the long shelving below and on either side of the Vizio 70-inch TV we recently purchased. I also needed bookshelf speakers that were FRONT and not rear ported because there would not be much clearance between the rear of the speaker and the wall behind. I originally was looking at the Infinity P163s -- and still have a slight twinge of regret over not getting them -- but while the P153s are usually close in price to the P163s, Amazon had them for 60% off. So here I am.

These have proven to be an excellent replacement for the Entra Twos. Given the size of the woofer, the low frequency response isn't quite as good, although I wouldn't exactly call it non-existent. But I was getting a subwoofer any way (I ended up getting the Polk Audio 10-inch subwoofer, a terrific value and more than serviceable), something I would highly recommend if you get these. I also ended up pairing the speakers with a Polk Audio TL1 center speaker -- the Infinity center speakers (the
