This review is from: Infinity Primus Two-way 6 1/2-Inch Bookshelf/Satellite Speaker (Black, Each) (Electronics)
I purchased a set of these speakers about a year ago to supplement my Cambridge Soundworks Movie Works surround speakers. I moved my old front speakers to the 7.1 top fronts and used the Infinity Primus as my new fronts. So far, I have been very impressed. The quality of sound has been superb. Since these are part of my existing system, I've already got a nice powered sub that takes care of the lows but these seem to do a great job through the whole octave range.I purchased the 6-1/2" but be aware that they are large and heavy and will take up a lot of real estate for front speakers - especially if you're used to satellite style speakers. They look very nice though - the front covers are nicely styled and the speakers really look nice with or without the screens. Compared to other fronts I've owned: * Bose 201's - Primus sound is superior in my opinion (muuch better range). Size and style of the Bose slightly superior. * Cambridge Soundworks MovieWorks 5.1 - Here again, Primus sound is cleaner and has better range. 3 x smaller than the Primus so there is a space sacrifice when owning this set. Overall, the build quality is great and the sound is great too. I'd highly recommend these for the price.

I bought a pair of the Primus 2 way 6 1/2" bookshelves to augment a previous generation Primus tower pair. They sound fantastic. Match up great with the other Primus speakers in the room. Quality construction. Very heavy for its size. I bought them as surround speakers, but for a small stereo setup they'd be fine as stand alones.

These speakers sound great for their price range. They are not high end speakers but then again they don't cost what high end speakers do. I use these for the front speakers of my 7.1 surround sound setup. They do quite well. They are not overly tinny with highs and do have good frequency response overall. I would use them for general purpose stereo speakers as well, as long as the application didn't require a lot of volume in a large room. Other than that, I highly recommend them. The price on Amazon was vastly cheaper than on a lot of other sites at the time of my purchase, about $85 VS $130. Great speakers.

This speaker has fairly flat response over its frequency range with 90 dB sensitivity. It is small sized, so I was able to instaLL it in an upper corner between ceiling and adjacent walls of my living room. Unfortunately, it is not available any more as P162, but it is available as 163BK from Infinity Primus.

Infinity P162 is a good speaker, but may need a sub-woofer,

I was putting together my first audio system in years and found that the combination of these speakers and receiver didn't have enough bass. This was a result of both the speakers and the receiver I paired it with. The receiver was a brand new Harman Kardon HK 3390 (80 watts/channel). The receiver doesn't have a "loudness" feature for lower listening levels and as a result these small speakers simply don't have the low-end for low volume conditions. If you pair these with a sub-woofer or an equalizer (it has pre-amp/amp jumpers in the back) they will probably be just fine. For me, I'll be shopping for a sub-woofer. They are a bit bright which is controllable with the treble control. I also understand from my research that the speakers will loosen-up/break-in and eventually provide more low end. (No way it could be enough to provide real bass though. There's just too much of a deficit there.) They have thumb screw speaker wire terminals on the back. They don't accept banana connectors, just in case you were wondering. They also don't have extra terminals for bi-wiring them like the similarly discounted Polk 30's do.
The speakers themselves are nice little bookshelf units that will fit on most table/shelf top locations with their small footprint. You can have it in any color you want as long as it's black. They are attractive and unobtrusive though. The thing I liked the most was the discounted price. If you shop around you can get these for around 50% off. At that price these are a terrific deal. They come with little stick-on rubber feet that you can install yourselve to help protect them from scratches while sitting on a shelf. Would I recommend them? Well yes, but only for those that do their research and know what they are buying. I'm marking them as 3 stars, because these are not high-end audiophile speakers although some reviews might lead you to think that. They are definitely worth the typically discounted prices that you can get them at though and the mid-range and high range output are clear. |
