3.0 out of 5 stars specs are incorrect
I ordered a pair of these. I have infinity speakers throughout my jeep and they play everything with crystal clarity. The speakers will not distort even at high levels, you just need to prepare the enclosure properly with a vibration dampening material ie. foam batting, silicone or whatever. I used shredded up old t-shirts in the plastic jeep roll bar enclosures and it...

5.0 out of 5 stars The sub that could... for cheap!, January 23, 2011

This review is from: Infinity Reference 1260w 12-Inch 1200-watt High-Performance Subwoofer (Single Voice Coil) (Electronics)
I bought a brand new car last summer and while the audio system in it was quite good for factory specs, it was lacking in the low end due to simply have smaller (6.5") speakers and no pre-installed subwoofer. In my car there was an audio upgrade option that included better speakers (subjective) and a sub, but it was part of the navigation option and cost over $700 extra. I couldn't afford this so i was left with the stock speakers until this weekend.

Enter the Infinity 1260w. I've had previous car audio experience with Infinity speakers and subs and was very impressed so i went back with what i knew was good. I bought this sub plus the MTX Bass Slammer BS112S Single 12" Sealed Enclosure and an MTX JackHammer JH300 - Amplifier - 1-channel. I didn't get the amp from Amazon as i found a better deal elsewhere. My last car audio setup had twice the power going to the sub but the amp was of lower quality. I was worried that with only roughly ~200w driving my new 12" sub it would be underpowered. But i felt compelled to try out the lower power, higher quality amp. Because i wasn't replacing the factory radio my amp had to have 3 specific qualities that narrowed down my selection. It had to have the following things: speaker level inputs, remote bass tuning knob, and auto turn on when detecting a speaker level input signal. The MTX provided all that.

I had the system installed professionally by a local audio store. When i listened to the sub for the first time i was impressed. It was cleaner and deeper than my previous setup! The 1260w was working flawlessly with only 200w due to its high efficiency and i was extremely pleased. I spent only $350 total and got a very clean setup that finally lets me the hear the low end of my songs again. I would recommend this sub to anyone looking for clean tight bass on a budget.

This was a first sub for me, and I did quite a bit of research before making my decision. You'll see a lot of hype about Dual voice coil vs. Single voice coil. What I established was the advantage to DVC was wiring options (running the coils in parallel to drop the Ohms, or hooking two subs up together at lower Ohms as well) or, having the second voice coil as a "backup" if one burns out. First of all that should only happen if you're over-powering your sub in the first place which isn't recommended. And most importantly pay attention to the RMS power rating of the sub, not the peak. This sub is 1200 watt peak, but only 300 watts RMS. This is plenty...this sub really hits hard and clean if you have it paired with the right amp. 300 watts RMS means the sub should be receiving approx. 300 watts continuously from your amp. So, if you hooked this up with a 1200 watt amp and cranked it up, I imagine it would bump REALLY hard...for about 5 minutes. Then...toasty!

I hooked mine up with a 400w Rockford Fosgate Punch 2 channel amp. Bridged it runs 400w @ 4 Ohms. I have the levels on the amp turned up between 2/3 and 3/4 the way up. So I think I'm running around 300w. The idea is not to max out your amp, or your sub. You will get optimum performance out of both this way. If you overpower your sub, or peak the amp, and your lucky enough not to burn one of them up, your sound will be dirty and distorted.

You have free option for enclosures with this sub as it is designed to work with sealed, ported, or bandpass boxes. I chose the sealed enclosure for size purposes to save trunk space. And responsiveness of the speaker is a little tighter with a sealed box.

I listen to metal, rap, electronica, classic rock...basically a little bit of everything ahd this sub sounds great with all of the above. It hits nice and tight for metal and rock, and bumps hard and low for rap, techno, etc. All around very versatile sub with great sound quality. I would recommend it to anyone for any kind of listening:) Hope this is helpful, I know I had a lot of questions it took a long time to answer when researching for myself.

Had to use a beefier amp than originally intended, but the guys at infinity answered my questions promptly. Sounds good even before it's fully broken in.

I bought one of these to replace the driver (someone poked a hole in the old one) for an MDF enclosure I made. It sounds great and I'm amazed at how inexpensive it was and made by Infinity! It dropped right into my enclosure and I have no complaints whatsoever.

Like the previous reviewer said, this is a 4 ohm single voice coil driver. Amazon sometimes gets specs wrong. I always look at the manufacturer website for the model number to be sure: [...]

If you're not a total fanatic who wants to blow up their trunk or shake the bolts on their chassis loose, I think this sub will do you just fine.

I used the Pyramid GW12BK grille on this driver and it fit with no problem: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000K8IYF0/ref=wms_ohs_product

I used shredded up old t-shirts in the plastic jeep roll bar enclosures and it works great. I bought two of these to replace my infinity 10" woofer from the same series. The only problem is these are 4 ohm speakers not 2 ohm as advertised in the amazon listing. If you know anything about speakers you realize this is quite a significant difference. I wrote amazon explaining the issue I am just waiting to see what they will do about it. If you are looking for a 2 Ohm sub-woofer the 1262w is the one you want. As far as Infinity goes though you can't go wrong, I am amazed they are so cheap these days.

I have purchased at least 10 different makes of subs (maybe more). These are the best I've tried for under a $100 each. They're more efficient, better dynamics, & sound the best.....period. I have heard better, but they cost $110 or more (Planet Audio...the bb series. Unless you want to compete, this is the perfect choice. I've been into hi-end audio since 1974, so I've heard more than you can imagine.

Awesome sub, put it in my car, still waiting apon the arrival for the second i had ordered, but i put it in the box and screwed it in ya pluged it in and it sounds so crystal clear its amazing. I was in awe i can assure you. Just warning although that it does not come with the mounting screws, so some will have to be purchased along with the box.

I purchased this to place in a single non-ported enclosure and used the Infinity Reference 1300a amp to power it. I am very pleased, this thing hits hard and looks pretty darn cool doing it too!
