A FineCollection of Brazilian Songs,
By
This review is from: Influencias (Audio CD)
I like Dori Caymmi. I have all of his American records or CD's, and I try to turn my friends on to them. This CD is a tribute to the (Brazilian) musicans who influenced him, and has not been released in the U.S.--my copy is a Brazilian import. If you know his music, you know the basic recipe for this CD--Dori's guitar and warm baritone; his elegant arrangements; excellent musicians, including Paulinho da Costa, Abraham Laboriel, and the strings of Suzie Katayama (real violins! Real cellos!); and alternating flavors of playfulness and longing (saudade.) Add, for this CD, songs by Jobim, Baden Powell, Moraes, three songs by Dori's father, and others by songwriters I'm not familiar with. Throw-in guest appearances by Gal Costa, Dori's sister Nana, and others. For dessert, a short piano arrangement of Claire de Lun in triibute to Debussy's influence on Bossa Nova, and to Dori's piano teacher. (I think--the liner notes are all in Portuguese, which I can only guess at.) I find it warm without being trite, gentle without being weak, and romantic without being schmaltzy. My longing is for this CD to be released in the U.S. Until then, it's just a click away.

Great Arranger shows His Influences from Traditional Samba,

This review is from: Influencias (Audio CD)
Dori Caymmi comes from an important breed in Brazilian music. He is son to Dorival Caymmi and brother to singer Nana Caymmi and Danilo Caymmi. Was I to say Dori Caymmi is most the brilliant son of old Caymmi, I would do no wrong.Dori Caymmi is a composer, singer and arranger. His most famous composition was "Like a Lover" with English lyrics by Alan and Marilyn Bergman and recorded by Carmen McRae, Mark Murphy, Sergio Mendes, and Sarah Vaughan. Material from this album consists of his choice of traditional Brazilian songs and composers that he takes as his great influences on his work. So the arranger side of Dori Caymmi is his most featured trace on this album. He's also invited great Brazilian songbirds like his sister Nana Caymmi and Gal Costa to sing some of the songs he has arranged. All sung in Portuguese. Beautiful!

-Below is a copy and paste of my review of another, out of print, edition of this CD. After several years of listening, I stand behind the 5 stars.

I live for these moments,

Devastating. Sitting in my stereo's "sweet spot" with just stinging tears welling up in my eyes from some very deep well of saudade. Exquisite forward motion of the songs from instrument to instrument or section to section, many at verrry slow tempos. You can just see Dori's mustache perched right above the microphone as his deep, soothing voice works it's magic. One North American musician gummed up a couple of tunes for me with his overly sweet playing. And on a few occasions the vocals sounded just a tad distorted. But as a whole, this album wiped me out so bad that I can't help but give it 5 stars.
