Mit zunehmender Intensität bestimmt CAAD (Computer Aided Architectural Design) die Praxis heutiger Architekturbüros. Mit dem Computer lassen sich komplexe Entwürfe schneller und präziser darstellen und variieren. Die Erstellung dreidimensionaler Modelle, die Simulations- und Animationsmöglichkeiten, die Verknüpfung mit dem World Wide Web und dem damit erschlossenen Informationsfluß - dies alles ermöglicht, so die Grundthese des Autors, nicht bloß eine quantitative, sondern vielmehr die qualitative Optimierung des schöpferischen Prozesses. Nach den räumlichen Ausdehnungen sowie der Zeitkategorie stellt die Information mithin eine neue, die fünfte Dimension der Architektur dar. Gerhard Schmitt (*1953) studierte in München und Berkeley, seit 1988 ist er Professor an der ETH in Zürich.
