Review

"Reading The Information and Knowledge Professional's Career Handbook is like hanging out with two really smart, experience, and wise mentors who aren't going to sugarcoat any of their advice because they know you really need the real deal. The information they provide in practical, actionable, and from this professional's experience, spot on." --Kim Dority, Infonista, May 2011

"There are few books currently on the market that speak specifically to the career aspirations of information and knowledge specialists. Anecdotal evidence suggest that many people in the field are looking for careers outside traditional library settings, so this is a timely and helpful guide for new or experienced professionals who are considering staying in libraries or making a jump to other opportunities, such as consulting...This guide is an excellent resource and is applicable to other professions." --The Journal of Academic Librarianship, June 2011

5.0 out of 5 stars taking the long view of IM career management May 23, 2011
Format:Paperback
In order to succeed in a competitive employment marketplace nothing goes without saying. It is good, then, that the Library and Information Management community has Ulla de Stricker and Jill Hust-Wahl who have recently collaborated to produce The Information and Knowledge Professional's Career Handbook. From the informative and descriptive Table of Contents through to the insightful Epilogue and Resources, Ulla and Jill cover the essentials of developing an engaged and dynamic career.

Starting with a simple declaration of intent with Why this Book, the authors point to a gap common to many specialized educational paths: that of translating knowledge, skills and expertise into a successful employment role that delivers value. In response, Ulla and Jill have crafted a succinct guide to navigating an Information Management career in any environment. It brings together commentary on resumes, interviewing and image, good questions to ponder at any career stage, interesting interviews along with great scenarios, how-tos and examples.

The subtitle, Define and Create your Success, hints at a theme woven throughout the book: the importance of pursuing learning opportunities as a cornerstone of a career management strategy. Whether it is better understanding of oneself or a subject matter, Jill and Ulla make clear that taking the long view means putting time and money aside for learning and engaging with colleagues.

The personal interviews resonate with the power and value of Librarians, Information, and Knowledge Management professionals. They are an excellent depiction of the expansive career horizon for anyone in the field. As a mid-career Librarian I found myself inspired again by the breadth, depth and passion found in the Library and Information Management community.

This small book is bursting with useful, practical advice. It will be equally at home in a syllabus as in your personal library.

Provides detailed, practical career advice that comes across as a cross between coaching, mentoring, and okay, (in the nicest possible way), a bit of nagging. But it's clear their goal is to help readers avoid career potholes if possible. To that end, the tone and format is strongly prescriptive, letting readers know in no uncertain terms how certain situations should be handled in order to help ensure career success.

Reading The Information and Knowledge Professional's Handbook is like hanging out with two really smart, experienced, and wise mentors who aren't going to sugarcoat any of their advice - because they know you really need the real deal. The information they provide is practical, actionable, and from this professional's experience, spot on. A recommended addition to the literature of LIS career development.

Here's a must-read book for anyone in the "information professions" - whether they are students, recent grads, or later-career professionals looking to chart the course of the rest of their working lives. The authors honestly and without sugar coating share their own experience and provide a wealth of guidance in a realistic and down to earth manner, and it's obvious they have "been there". Because of the personal angle and tone, Jill and Ulla are very open about the lessons they learned, which makes for really enjoyable reading. Going through the book's chapters is like having a "cut to the chase" private chat with wise mentors. As one of the authors stated in an interview with Dennie Heye[...] the book is not a recipe for *where to look for a job* ... but it sure is a priceless companion full of advice about how to succeed *on the job*. Buy it for yourself or as a gift for someone you know - would also make a valuable donation to an academic library and/or library school.
