Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Access to and utilization of information has changed dramatically in recent years, directly impacting the role of library media specialists. Teachers are incorporating information skills into lessons and working closely with media specialists to provide activities that educate and challenge students on many levels. In response to this development, this intensive guide provides background in methods of instruction and delves into the research being done in the field of information-skills acquisition. First examining the historical role of library instruction, Thomas then describes a variety of approaches. A whole chapter is devoted to Kuhlthau's Information Search Process. The remaining chapters focus on individual learning styles, the impact of technology, and the role of today's library media centers. Well researched and logically organized, this is nevertheless an intimidating package that takes some effort to digest. School media specialists seeking to improve their academic understanding of the subject or desiring to support the need for increased instructional skills will benefit from this impressive resource and its extensive references.-Susan McCaffrey, Haslett High School, MI

This review is from: Information Literacy and Information Skills Instruction: Applying Research to Practice in the School Library Media Center 2nd Edition (Library and Information Problem-Solving Skills Series) (Paperback)
This is a useful text covering three facets of information, 1)the history of the development of library instruction in schools; 2)the research and implications as it applies to searching for information; and 3)trends, models, and strategies for teaching information literacy in schools. The last facet, being the largest in volume, is naturally the most practical; and it will be the reason to select this book. The research presented includes old and new ideas and conclusions that build upon one another to form a cohesive and sensible approach.

On a more personal note, I found the material very helpful to get up to speed in an area that can be neglected in public librarianship training.
