Brilliant, Mind-Altering Sonic Surrealism,
By Crypt "thecrypt777" (Arkham) - See all my reviews

An impressive return! It truely seems as if ASF is back to reclaim their position as one of the weridest, wildest, most creative bands around. This record consists of layers upon layers of samples, beats, guitars, subleminal noises, yelling and screaming, and of course that distinctly Fiendish flavor; a perfect balance of social criticism, surrealism, creepiness and sillyness. They are definitely pushing forward sonically, yet remaining true to themselves. Sometimes I miss that old lo-fi, primitive ASF sound, but then I get caught up in the all-out brilliance of these songs. I'm also glad they haven't abandoned their Goth-Punk roots this time as I thought they had after Inferno and Nocturnal Emissions. Now hopefully they'll play some shows in the US and not take so long on recording a follow up to this album!

This is (in my humble opinion) the best ASF album since 'another planet'. It is terribly infectious and grows in your head like a delicioulsy malignant tumor! If you are an ASF fan this is a must, if you are looking for an intro to the band this is also a good place to start. Although I recommend 'Acid bath' for a more chronologically accurate intro (it was my first ASF record). Dark, relentless, humorous, lyrically interesting, cleanly produced and much better than some of their other recent releases (such as the less than stellar, though most well known, 'curse'). I think it picks up where 'another planet' left off so long ago. Driving industrial and (at times) old school hip-hop beats, nik fiend's intense and alternately brooding/enraged vocals, crunching guitars, and a plethora of electronic noises and interesting samples come together to make this another innovative release from this 'best of genre' band. They haven't lost their touch!
