Editorial Reviews

On one hand, their fifth album, Information Retrieved, is the logical and accessible realization of asound Pinback have been developing and refining for over a decade. However, that consistency that we've taken for granted is what makes Information Retrieved such a euphoric surprise; their finest and most fully realized album, a dozen years deep into a career that includes bona fide modern classics like Good To Sea and Summer In Abaddon. Simply put, this is better than weever could have expected.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love the album! October 20, 2012
Format:MP3 Music
I might be biased since I am married to Zach, but I love this album! I've listened to it on repeat (secretly) for days and I think that he and Rob did a beautiful job writing and recording these gorgeous songs. Very moody, melancholy and atmospheric. Our son likes it too. He's been dancing around listening to it with me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best yet October 16, 2012
Format:Audio CD
Pinback haven't evolved a whole lot in the decade-plus that they've been around, but what they do, they do incredibly well, and they've perfected it on Information Retrieved. To this hardcore fan, it's their best album to date. It grabs the best elements from every part of their career and synthesizes them down to 38 perfect minutes. Beautiful production, fantastic performances, and songs that stand with the best stuff they've written. Pinback isn't a band with so much depth that you'll be calling this your favorite album 10 years from now, but I can pretty much guarantee you'll still be coming back to "Information Retrieved" in 10 years. It is the pinnacle of indie pop.

5.0 out of 5 stars Listened once and love it, Amazon please fix track 1 October 16, 2012
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
the first track of the album has some random audio dropping. aside from that the quality of sound/recording is fantastic. glad to see they have released something new, worth the 5 year wait.

*update* it's apparently fixed now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Every Song Develops Into Something Beautiful October 21, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Pinback's "Information Retrieved" is the best ear candy I have heard in years. It is simply some of the most intelligent yet friendly sounding music I've run across. No real rough edges here, just a smooth and fascinating listening experience!

A friend of mine with good musical taste recommended Pinback to me a while back and I forgot about what he had said until I fished the note he had written out of my wallet and saw Amazon had "Information Retrieved" on a special for download. I thought "Why not?" And when I heard it, my brain's jaw dropped!

Although the download has the flaw in "Proceed To Memory" others have mentioned, I am still thrilled with this band's sound. I will very happily spend the extra money to buy the CD so I can have it without the flaws.

If you like highly intelligent music that is not too mired in its perfection to play on emotional strings and send you drifting into thought, this music is what you need. It is defintitely mathy, but it has too many moods to count.

Melodies that can be angular yet retain their melody... Rhythm guitar parts that tend to be picked not strummed, that play upon each other and create point and counterpoint... Pinback's music can only be described as a sort of pop/rock genius. There is a lot going on in Pinback's music, but it still has plenty of space in the arrangements. So while there is lots going on to tickle the brain, it does not sound cluttered. The guitars are generally played clean, without any distortion to hide things... it has a rather naked feel for the most part. Nothing is flashy-sounding or bombastic; in fact, it often feels understated, but that is from the patience exhibited in the execution of the often slow-to-mid-tempo arrangements.

5.0 out of 5 stars Avoid MP3 version for now, but great music. October 16, 2012
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
This is an incredibly good Pinback album, so I was sad to find out that the first track, Proceed To Memory, has some encoding issues and audio drops out for several seconds between 20 and 26 seconds. Until Amazon resolves this I would buy the CD on here, or on iTunes or the Google Play store.

Pinback has been one of my favorite bands for a while, and usually when bands start "maturing," their sound turns into something so far from what they started as that they become almost unrecognizable or, even worse, unenjoyable. Pinback, fortunately, has not gone this route. This is an extremely well written, performed, and produced release. It shows a huge maturing in their style while maintaining what makes them a great band in the first place. The technical instrumentation and polyrhythms are all there, along with Rob Crow's great lyricisms. This is sure to be one of the best (and most overlooked) releases of the year. If you love Pinback, you will love this record. If you have never heard them, you will most likely enjoy this record. If you didn't enjoy Pinback's previous releases, that probably won't change here. And shame on you if that's the case.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yes, please fix Track 1! October 17, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Good album, but feel ripped off with missing audio in first track! How disappointing it is to hear a song disappear for a second in three places. I'd like my purchase to work correctly. Another reason why I prefer CDs. :(

5.0 out of 5 stars Pinback = Auditory Reboot January 5, 2013
Format:Audio CD
Have to start by saying that this one was worth the wait. In my opinion, better than the last one in it's fluid-cohesiveness. From track to track it rolls beautifully, with equal parts Groove and Mellowness to counterbalance it all. In short, after getting older and having kids, these guys have landed on top of their potential instead of drifting from it.

And after a 5-yr break, I have to say thanks to these guys for returning to the table with something surely more developed, but also within the vein of their previous magic. Bands who turn out this kind of thoughtful, artfully-layered work are often prone to the kind of one-upmanship that becomes unlistenable in its genius. I could tell that after the first listen, I will be tapping-in to to this one for years to come.

And that's the last word for this review. That of everything I've absorbed and listened to over the years, I always come back to Pinback. This music has the unique ability to sound fresh over time, and get me back into loving music (when all the new stuff wanes and seems to feel stale.) It's also THE BEST music to free your mind to and adjust your attitude while you work, drive, or just have time to really listen. Every time I listen to a Pinback album I walk away energized, happier and more inspired. And for this reason I say thanks to them for another much needed auditory-reboot.

I bought this album based upon one song I heard on satellite and have not been disappointed. The writing is well done and the production compliments what the songs are going for.

its just dang good. If you are familiar with pinback's previous albums you'll get the same delicious bass lines with tasty harmonies. They know what they do well and do it often.
