this book is an unprecedented contribution to the education literature because it posits consciousness evolution as a fundamental aspect of learning and knowing. far from an abstract appraisal of this phenomenon, this book takes the reader through the journey of transformation, exposing the possibility and limits of different levels of discovery and revelation. hart uses personal anecdotes to flesh out what otherwise might be a dry academic run through the transformative process. further, and a real treat for this reader, hart reveals how transpersonal theory sheds light on the educational process. he is not afraid to speak boldly of human potential and invoke the oftentimes tenuous rhetoric of east/west spirituality. yet, hart saves the book from new age shallowness by backing his arguments with sound philosophical evidence. i hope that this book reaches educators working at all levels of learning.

This book is everything I had hoped for. As an educator concerned about the lack of truly holistic learning in my students and with a keen interest in spiritual/transformative learning, this book confirmed my own views of the shortcomings of our contemporary education system. It affirmed my own approaches to teaching. It is so true that our students need to learn more deeply--not just the academic subject but the living of the subject, personally and interpersonally. Tobin Hart articulates astutely and convincingly how education needs to be transformed, and offers helpful guidance to teachers interested in modifying their practice or writing curriculum to integrate this potential for transformation. I especially appreciate how Hart brings in spiritual wisdom as one of the foundations of his philosophy of education. I just hope more educators and administrators begin to see the truth of what this book has to offer. It is well worth buying.

Haven't finished reading this one yet, but it is a classic and anyone with an interest in the content and approach of educators (secular and/or faith-based) should spend some time perusing the contents. Will update the review when I finish the book.
