Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

A policeman stumbles on what appears to be a garbage bag on one of York’s main streets, but on closer inspection, he discovers it’s a man who has been beaten nearly to death. The man dies later in the hospital without ever regaining consciousness, and what has now become a murder investigation is assigned to the detective duo of Hennessey and Yellich. The pair soon learns that the victim is local businessman Edwin Hoole, and further investigation reveals that his brother, Harold, had died some months earlier in what might have been “unusual” circumstances. Hennessey and Yellich find links to other mysterious deaths in the area, all of which can be traced back to 541 Company, an organization specializing in the rather iffy “equity release” business. Turnbull’s engaging prose style, along with his capable plotting, ably drawn characters, and realistic descriptions of police work, makes for an entertaining, if low-key, read. A solid series for British procedural fans. --Emily Melton

5.0 out of 5 stars Well-crafted, well-written British police procedural, set in York, July 27, 2011
By
This well-plotted mystery is part of a series by a veteran British writer who is probably less well known in the United States than he deserves to be. Two Yorkshire police detectives, Hennessy & Yellich, form the backbone of this series, but although we know something of their private lives, the focus is on the mystery, which is one of the things I like about this series -- none of the emphasis on the relationships and private lives of the police that have become increasingly popular in this genre. The writing is concise, with little wordage spent on matters that do not in some way move the story forward or give us important insight into the characters.

The story begins with a constable walking his beat in York, who discovers a dying man. The man is quickly identified, but there seems little to help police find his killer or killers -- although there is reason to believe it may not be a random act of violence. The man's widow comments that he had been upset about something but would not provide her with any information because it was that kind of a marriage - he was a very private man who was very close to his brothers. Unfortunately, one of his brothers also died unexpectedly, not too long ago. The police wonder if this death - apparently natural -- may be connected in some way. This begins the careful process of following leads to learn more and try to discover what the murder victim was upset about, since this might have given someone a motive for murder.

The reader follows the police through their investigation, as more information is revealed with each interview. If you like well-crafted police procedurals that are low on violence and not interested in romance, I think you will enjoy this entry in the series. The book is tightly written, and the quality of writing well above average, particularly the dialogue and characterization.
