Amazon.com Review

The passage was full of details, action, characters and was building some sort of story. Well written. It seems excellent. I would like to read more to see if I would enjoy it.

Amazon.com Review

This is a very interesting and exciting set up for a thriller. I had chills reading the prologue and was disappointed that there wasn't a little more of this one to read. Please consider that a very good thing. The hook/plot will probably sell really well.

5.0 out of 5 stars A biomedical thriller ... with Nazis! September 5, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I admit - I bought this Kindle title mainly because it was recommended by Amazon based on some of my other books, and because it was just $0.99. I was pleasantly surprised. While clearly written by a long-time medical professional (I later found out that Dr. Hirsch is currently Professor of Pediatrics and Chief of Rheumatology at the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh), the prose does not disintegrate into biomedical jargon. This, combined with a plot which raises a variety of philosophical and ethics questions, a roster of well-developed characters, and a good measure of exciting action sequences, made it hard for me to put the book down. Highly recommended!

3.0 out of 5 stars Two For One!! Educational and Entertaining! June 13, 2012
By LoLo
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Historically correct information in a fictional setting. What could be better?

It's not often a reader gets a chance at education and entertainment at the same time.

"Informed Consent" offers both. There's a seamless switch between Nazi Germany in the 1940s and the present as well as between settings in Israel, Germany and The United States.

The story line itself is excellent. A hideous medical experiment performed on a young Jewish girl in Auschwitz and the attempt to duplicate it using her son and daughter in America some 40 years later.

The ethical aspects of experimental medicine are well handled and the author manages to raise questions which the average person doesn't often ask him/herself.

He also manages to slip in several incidents of very wrong medical experiments done by The United States government - further blurring the line between "us" and "them," forcing the thoughtful reader to acknowledge that no country is totally blameless and no one is really safe from egotistical rulers and the doctors who work for them unless there are vigilant safeguards in place.

Unfortunately the editing and formatting is rather poor and the physical act of reading compromises the mental involvement one wishes for in a good story.

4.0 out of 5 stars Jewsh Medical Thriller May 3, 2010
Format:Paperback
Like author Dr. Raphael Hirsch's first book, 'The Transformed' this is also a medical thriller with a Jewish aspect. This time, the Jewish 'twist' is about a mad Nazi doctor who performed genetic experiments on Dr. David Myers' mother in Auschwitz. David goes to Germany, and finds a secret lab facility where experiments are still going on. There are lots of twists and turns in the plot, but David finally manages, with the help of his cousin in East Berlin, to solve the riddle and expose the evil secret of what happened to his mother and other young women in the infamous Barrack 12 in the Auschwitz concentration camp. I like this book, and I hope Dr Hirsch keeps writing medical thrillers.

1.0 out of 5 stars poorly written August 6, 2012
By Bobbi M
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
While the actual storyline is interesting, the telling of the story needs a lot of work. The writing has very little flow, the dialog is stilted, "sex" scenes are thrown in just for the sake of having naked people in the story (the shower scene near the beginning comes to mind). This book is a chore to read; it's only my curiosity of the plot and my inability to leave a book unfinished that got me through it. Thank goodness it only cost me 99 cents; any more would be a waste of money.

update: I had to come back and drop my rating to 1 star. I just don't feel right giving it two! This book is the second-worst book I have read in my entire life. I'm struggling to find the words, so I'll just say this: Nazis, incest, and bestiality, all wrapped up together in a ridiculous, inane package. And the lack of contractions (can't, won't, etc) makes it feel like the author was trying to write a term paper instead of a story.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Book, Poor Editing June 4, 2012
By grimm
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I enjoyed the story, and it seemed mostly accurate medically and well-written. However the numerous word errors (of the type seen with auto-correct) were very grating. There is no substitute for actual human editing.

But the book jumped around too much. The plot was not believable. I really found the ending to be disappointing and beyond any suspension of disbelief.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not very realistic. February 19, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
The story wasn't, very realistic. Nobody can avoid being shot at so many times. The idea of interviewing humans and apes is also unrealistic.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting Thoughts/Incite June 18, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Informed Consent was the first book ive read by Raphael Hirsch.

OVERALL RECOMMENDATION:
I would recommend this book to friends. Especially people who like medical-thrillers
and books relating to current issues. The book is one of the better books ive read
recently and well worth the low price.

The book evolves around the moral issues of human testing, and how informed does
informed consent have to be. While Hirsch (at least in my opinion) doesn't give a
definite opinion on the matter, he does a good job of explaining both sides of the
argument allowing the reader to reach his/her own opinion.

SPECIFIC OPINIONS
-Unlike most fantasy/sci-fi/medical-thrillers, the book does a very good job of
informing the reader about the science involved, as well as setting up the
historical background.

-The book was a quick read, and didn't suffer from dull/dragging spots that alot of
books do.

-I am tired of the old good/bad guy books, where the line between black and white is
clearly drawn and the good guy will always come out ahead. Informed Consent does a
good job of staying clear of these stereotypes. I was extremely pleased at the way
the book handled these areas. In my opinion it gives the book greater suspense and a
higher level of realism. At the time of writing this review, ive already read another
of his- The Transformed. One of my only dissapointments in this area is the
'superhero' like main character in both books... who seem to be able to get out of
anything.

-Character development was ok. I felt that certain characters could have been
developed more, and would of liked to understand more about a few as well.
