A fine Informix Resource,
By Joseph D. Jendrysik (Massachusetts) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Informix Basics (Paperback)
This book is a fine resource for anyone who is just learning Informix database. It provides a good overview on all the concepts that related to Informix. It can be used as a desktop reference when dealing with Informix issues. The book is very in-depth, but does not provide all the details on all subjects. The book title is a good indication of this.

what a wonderful book this is. It provides a great base for beginners but also has lots of tips that even experienced DBA's will appreciate. I can't believe it took so long for a book like this to show up, but I'm glad that it was this author who wrote it. Mr. Miller's writing is clear, concise and funny. I wish all technical books would be so fun to read.

A pleasant consolidation of various Informix documents.,

There's not too much in this book that can't be found within the many volumes of Informix manuals. The difference is that this book is quite well written, it includes readily applicable examples, and employs a tutorial approach that can be easily followed. This book is both informative and fun to read. A couple of typos can't keep me from giving this worthy book five stars!

Not for Informix Administrators,
By Jeffrey W. Cooper "guy_from_california" (Temecula, CA United States) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME)

I bought this book hoping it would help me administer Informix. It is primarily geared more toward the person looking to learn SQL syntax and apply it to Informix, with a side-bar focus to the DB Admin. The book is not bad for what it covers, I just thought (hoped) it would be geared more to the DB Admin.

I have to confess that I found out a lot of this information the hard way. I played with existing programs and databases. What make this book so good is that it tells me what it is that I have been doing and what I missed. I do have to weed out what I can use as I am using SE not online. The CD is almost exclusive online.
There is lots of visuals and working code and tips to get you off the ground. I am using this book to take an Access database and replace with Informix and integrate with some existing store bought manufacturing applications.

I have over ten years experience working with MS SQL Server, I know ANSI SQL. I purchased this book BC my new place of employment uses a lot of Informix and this book was highly recommended several places. At the time of my purchase this book was selling for anywhere from $70 to $300. I paid $95 for a book in near new condition. I thought I got a pretty good deal, boy was I wrong. Unless you know absolutely zero about SQL and are running an older version of Informix this book is completely useless!! I'll give you an example; I had to update an existing stored procedure to work with a new sub routine, however since the procedure was in use by other routines and web services I could not make changes to the procedure signature. Easy answer, tack on an optional parameter at the end and provide a default value. So I pull out this book and look at the chapter on stored procedures. The only information on arguments say you can execute procedures with input and output arguments and then the book provides syntax for execute said procedure. No where in this book does it provide any information on declaring arguments for a procedure. In reality its not that hard, but what about optional parameters and default values? It does say you can declare a global variable and give it a default value, but not local variables. Aren't arguments local, that is only in the scope of the procedure? So does that mean you can't give an argument a default value? All said in done, it wasn't hard to figure out, like I said I have enough SQL experience, but it does go to show how useless this book is. To top it off I paid $100 for it. Don't make the same mistake I did, DONT BUY THIS BOOK!
