This book explains all the essential concepts involved in Informix datablade programming. It assumes that the reader is competent in C and SQL. It also assumes an understanding of operating system concepts such as threads and process control. The text moves quickly through the subject matter and it is not an easy read. It has a high information density and several chapters and sections must be studied, not just read. I found several spelling and grammar errors that are evidence that the book was poorly proof-read. There were, however, no errors serious enough to obfuscate the author's intent.

In comparison to the book "Informix Universal Data Option" by Allen and Bambara, "Informix Dynamic Server 2000" by Roy is much more appropriate for those who actually want to write Informix datablades. The Allen book covers a broader selection of topics, but at a much more general level and does not address datablade programming in the same depth as the Roy book.

The CD that accompanies the book contains fully functioning copies of utilities from Informix such as BladeSmith, BladeManager, BladePack, SchemaKnowledge and the SQL Editor. It also contains all the Informix Reference Manuals from Informix Press in their entirety. . I would recommend this book to anyone who needs to learn datablade programming. It won't be the easiest book you've' ever read, but it does contain the information you'll need.
