Product Description

Ingersoll

During their years of tireless creative urge, Robert and Charles Ingersoll, the founders of one of the oldest American watch manufacturers, established many milestones in the field of developing pocket and wrist watches. They followed an ambitious plan that incorporated on the one hand, to offer watches to the broad public, and on the other hand to offer reasonable prices whilst maintaining real quality. In 1892, thanks to Henry Ford, they succeeded in developing an automated method of production, first for pocket watches and later for wrist watches. Alongside the existing handcrafted production of Ingersoll watches, an automated production of watches was established.

With high quality and precision, at the very reasonable price of 1 dollar (which was a day's wages at the time) the so-called "Dollar-Watch" was born. The Dollar-Watch became so popular that about 1 million of these watches were produced. Even Theodore Roosevelt mentioned that during his hunting trip in Africa he was described as "the man from the country where Ingersoll was produced."

The success of the "Dollar Watch" (also called the "Yankee") from then on was amazing. The Ingersoll brothers had to adapt to increasing production and increasing production plants. Meanwhile, the product range had been expanded by some technical pioneering refinements. Also the production of the smallest pocket watch ever seen had begun. In 1919 the Ingersoll brothers developed the first watch with the so called "night design", the "Radiolite" with luminous dial.

Disney sells their IP to pretty much anyone so you have to be careful, especially with online purchases. Thankfully, this watch is up to the usual Ingersoll standard. It is a beautfiul watch that looks and feels like it was made before everything was plastic junk. Mickey's hands tell the time, and while it isn't the most precise pointer I have seen, it works just fine and looks great. Any Disney or Ub Iwerks fan will be pleased as punch. Be careful if you take this to Disney World with you; you will get an endless stream of compliments.

It would be more than silly to buy this for full price. It's really silly to buy it for $150, as I did. But ain't that the point? Full-sized (not oversized) pocket watch. Good quality; 'pre-aged' in a non-offensive, untroubling way to look olde fashioned, with slightly yellowed dial. I wish it had a real crystal instead of a plastic one (most people wouldn't look for the difference). No metal cover for the crystal, because the original it's modeled after wasn't so fancy. Yes, it's wind-up. Heavy. The real deal.
Probably looks a darn sight better than the 30 dollar ones you can also find on Amazon. I used to have a 30 dollar one, not necessarily by the same maker. Those are small gifts for a dude with a sense of humor; these are for dudes with a sense of humor and some cash behind them.
Have you made it to the big-eared big-time? Say it with Mickey.

Look closely at the features and this watch spells fun. It is mechancial and you get to look at it more often than most of your watches. Look at Mickey's hands if you wanted exact time wrong, but you see the puffing little hands of Mickey--fun. Then look at the second hands, you see a circle with three little Mickeys chasing each other make your own story up. If you wanted a fancy chain well another forget it remember, we are going back in technical skills available. Overall, an totally neat watch built on a fun approach. Buy one, and you will not be disappointed.
