Book Description

Drawing Gallery October 1, 2008
The fourth book of the Drawing Gallery Series is devoted to Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (1780-1867). Considered one of the greatest French draughtsmen of all time, the artist left thousands of preparatory drawings for his paintings, along with an incomparable series of almost five hundred graphite portraits that have always been deemed the highest expression of his genius. The Louvre collection offers excellent examples of these two aspects of Ingres' graphic activity; each work is accompanied by a brief comment.

4.0 out of 5 stars Impressive presentation of a master's work, June 30, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Ingres (Drawing Gallery) (Paperback)
There are many books on famous master drawings, such as Ingres. But this Drawing Gallery book is by far the best presenation of drawings I have seen for the price. The clarity and size of each of the many Ingres works provided in this book make it a fascinating insight into the amazing line quality, composition, and depth of emotion captured in his subjects. I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to explore his drawings.

This review is from: Ingres (Drawing Gallery) (Paperback)
This is a review of an exhibit of Ingres' drawings, but not the one I was looking for. I saw another Ingres show at the Louvre a few years ago and was disappointed that there was no catalogue, especially since I was looking for his loving drawings of babies and small children. Those were his favorite subjects and they are mostly in private collections and therefore not reproduced. This book is only an introduction and I'm hopeful there will be other books coming out with more of those wonderful drawings.
