Book Description

**Nominated for the Bram Stoker Award® - Superior Achievement in Novel - 2012**

Paul Henninger is a rookie cop on San Antonio's troubled East Side, where every night is a war against the gangs and the drug dealers. But Paul has a dark past, and a dark inheritance.

The ghost of Martin Henninger has returned to make sure his son, Paul, delivers on his apocalyptic charge, the result of Martin's black magic, and he’s killing everyone in his path.

With his two worlds colliding, and the body count stacking up, Paul soon finds himself the lead suspect in a series of grisly cult-style killings, and in an emotional standoff between duty, the truth, his wife, and his dead family.

Meanwhile, Keith Anderson, San Antonio's best homicide detective, is hot on Paul's heels. His investigation takes him deep into the secrets of Paul's family. But what he finds there just might kill them both.

“When I started reading Inheritance, my first reaction was one word—WOW! I kept reading, and I was blown away. Police procedural? Yeah. Horror novel? That, too. But most importantly—one helluva novel. Joe tells a roaring good tale, and when you finish it, you’ll have a lot to say, but WOW will be the first word out of your mouth.”
—Rick Hautala, author of Glimpses and Indian Summer

“An artful haunting with the gloomy quality of a Terrance Malick crime drama”
—Weston Ochse, author of SEAL Team 666

“With Inheritance, Joe McKinney delivers a first-rate supernatural thriller with edge-of-your-seat suspense, a high-octane plot, and pitch-black horror. Add to this mix strong characterization and an insider’s knowledge of law enforcement, and you have one of the best novels I’ve read in ages. I loved it!”
—Tim Waggoner, author of The Harmony Society and Like Death

“Joe McKinney has proven, yet again, that he is a true literary genius. Inheritance is a breath-taking thrill ride masterfully crafted to grip the reader, pulling them deep into the nightmares of its characters with a level of suspense that steals the breath from your lungs. Brilliant!”
— Gabrielle Faust, author of Revenge and Eternal Vigilance

“Joe McKinney delivers. Inheritance is a brisk, wry and deliriously creepy tale of family secrets and black magic that is guaranteed to get your goat!”
—Harry Shannon, author of Dead and Gone and The Hungry

4.0 out of 5 stars Blood, Gore, and Lots of Heart May 13, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
There are plenty of previous reviews on this one, so why should I add my voice to the throng?

Because Joe McKinney surprised me. And I like that. And how did he surprise me? Not with the ending (while not predictable, it was no great punch in the gut); not with pure blue-sky invention, nor with any particular plot points, twists, or other auctorial feats of legerdemain.

What turned the trick was the heart--and I am not referring to the multitude of hearts that stop beating in this story. Amidst the copious carnage, McKinney has managed to layer a great deal of genuine heart--people who care for one another and are not afraid to show it. We actually have police brass herein who are not cardboard, tough-guy caricatures. Badass cops with feelings. How very refreshing. For that alone, McKinney deserves praise.

I'm giving this one 4 stars because I can't give it 3.95555, and I feel it deserves better than 3. If this had been straight police procedural or a hard crime novel I would have given it even higher marks, because I found myself much more interested in the bonding and relationships than the supernatural elements (although there are some well-executed creepy moments).

Inheritance is worth your time, and McKinney is a fine writer who I will be following closely.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cops and Grave Robbers February 4, 2013
By RRJames
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
An interestung mix of thriller/cop procedural/horror story that masters all three. McKinney's police scenes ring completely true and his supernatural sections run with the best of the genre. The characters are well-crafted, especially the tortured Paul and his loathesome father Martin. The plot doesn't miss a beat and you'll devour this book in one sitting if you let yourself.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best book I've read in years. April 6, 2013
Format:Paperback
Inheritance follows the path of Paul Henninger, a rookie cop in San Antonio's drug-infested East Side. A police procedural made authentic by the author's experience as a real-life San Antonio policeman, it has a lot to offer fans of the genre.

But Inheritance is also a ghost story. Paul's abusive father Martin has charged him with an unholy task, and death will not stop him from seeing it done. As Martin grows in power and pulls his son deeper into his world of apocalyptic death, Paul's marriage, job, and mind crumble.

McKinney's tale is reminiscent of the best parts of Clive Barker, Peter Straub, and Stephen King. It's a personal, visceral tale of loyalty and betrayal, of hope and despair, and it's hard to put down. Up to the last page, McKinney leaves you uncertain whether good or evil will ultimately prevail.

It's not a perfect book--there are a few typos, a bit too much deus ex machina, and a couple of scenes that seem unnecessary--but it's the best novel I've read in years.

I haven't read one of Joe McKinney's novels before. I look forward to reading more.

Inheritance is simply an amazing novel. It has everything a horror fan could ask for and more. In real life, Mr. Mckinney is a police officer, having spent time as a patrol officer for the San Antonio Police Department, a homicide detective, a disaster mitigation specialist, and a patrol commander. With Inheritance, he clearly uses his many years on the force to tell a finely detailed and sensationally terrifying tale. The action and situations the characters are thrown into seem almost too real and frightening, from dark family secrets to police action on the streets and in eerie, dark settings, making it impossible to put the book down--and I'm not even talking about the supernatural yet. And speaking of the supernatural, there are some truly nasty, frightening baddies in this one. McKinney has proven himself to be a master of horror over and over, and with Inheritance he has upped his game. This novel is on a new level and clearly shows that McKinney's writing and story-telling has no ceiling.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story! March 16, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
It's like a Dean Koontz psychic story, except Dean Koontz isn't screwing it up with idiotic names and go-nowhere sidelines!

If Joe McKinney is half as good at being a cop as he is at writing, well, he should probably wear a cape.

Read it!!!
