very, very steamy ( soap opera worthy),

This review is from: Inheritance (G K Hall Large Print Book Series) (Hardcover)
I first got this book from my mom's personal romance library and I was reluctant to read it 'cause it's so long (600+). But it was summer at that time and I had nothing better to do so what the hey, might as well read it. Boy, am I glad I went with my instincts 'cause this is the best contemporary book I ever read. I usually don't go for these kinds of books 'cause I'm more the historical romance type, but believe me, this book is just incredibly awesome. It's all about family, romance, drama, tragedy, betrayal, success, and best of all, oh so sweet revenge! God, this book just got it all and anyone who reads this would definitely not be bored. Actually, I bet you won't get any sleep while reading this one 'cause your eyes would be glued to the book from the first page to the very last. This story is about Laura Fairchild, a smart, very beautiful, but extremely naive girl who was dirt poor but learned the all the ropes of living in high society from the very influential Salinger family who made their fortune from their deluxe hotels scattered all over the country. She got extremely close to Owen Salinger, the family's patriarch, to Allison, Owen's grandaughter, and to Paul, Owen's handsome grandnephew. However, Laura's happy little bubble exploded when her beloved Owen died. In his will, he gave most of his millions to his family, but he also left Laura money and properties that infruiated the rest of the greedy family. They somehow managed to disinherit poor Laura and leave her totally peniless and homeless. But she was not absolutely empty-handed, because she has with her the priceless knowledge about hotel management Owen thought her while he was still alive and she vowed that she would get back her inheritance no matter what and get her revenge. This may sound a little vindictive to you but I gotta tell you, after all the Salingers did to Laura, you just wanna see them all suffer. Even Allison, whom Laura thought was her friend, thought the worst of her, but the saddest part was that Paul, whom she was engaged to, broke off the wedding because he thought she was nothing but a gold-digger and thief. As the years go on, Laura would keep on succeeding and succeeding on her hotel businesses until she bought back everything that was left to her by Owen and then, bankrupt the Salingers by using what Owen thought her. I tell you, it's just so exciting seeing seeing her get all she wanted by using her brains. She managed to own the hotels that celebrities and royals would kill to stay on and it's so rewarding to see that after all those years of tragedies and hard work, she gets to trample the high and mighty Salingers in the dirt. But the extremely juicy part was when she and the Salingers, especially Allison and Paul, meet for the first time after all those years and they see how filthy rich and successful Laura became. That was so good! I tell you, this is a lot like one of those daytime soaps but unlike them, this book won't keep you waiting for so long to see what happens. You just have to keep on reading and reading and you won't be able to stop, 'cause believe me, you will be hooked!

A woman of determination,
By
This review is from: Inheritance (Mass Market Paperback)
A good ,slightly soapy story of a young woman, cheated out of her rightful inheritance ,who ,with guts and determination, changes her life and becomes rich and powerful.I love the descriptions of the beautiful furniture and furnishings of her hotels--makes a nice change from filth and poverty which have pervaded novels in the last few years.

A superb tale of a woman determined to rewrite her own ill-fated destiny. Many adventures, trials, failures, and successes mixed with romance in this book make it an inspirational story to all female underdogs. Regarding the Author(s): My first peek at this husband/wife team's artistry--I've been hooked ever since!

SHADY PAST TO A SUNNY FUTURE,
This review is from: Inheritance (Mass Market Paperback)
Loved this book about Laura Fairchild with her early youth as a misguided girl to a determined woman who fights for a dream without realizing her inner talents as a hotel owner and organizer and is deceived into what has been hers all along due to an inheritance. Perhaps there are too many coincidences as the families combine, but worth reading due to the twists and turns, loves and betrayals, and learning so much about how hotels just don't run themselves, the intuitive mine of Laura. knowing just what people want in a hotel to coincide with the times...but Laura's mindset is not into the average hotel occupant...she's aiming for what the "upscale people" want and perhaps it was a dream she had from the start to upscale herself? Learning about the decorating and services she instituted was well written down to smallest details. The characters were enjoyable with their complicated family ties and love lives, some always remaining loyal to Laura--some not or unsure, but these twists and turns leave the reader admiring Laura from the start. Perhaps you may think this book is a fairy tale, as how is it possible for a poor girl (and her brothers) to suddenly have her lives mingled with the rich and powerful, until you realize she had "class" from the start. (another Woman of Substance-type book) that will keep you turning the pages.

Inheritance,

This was one of the most compelling, vivid stories I have ever read. The characters and scenery come alive as the authors take you through a dozen or so years of this woman's life--of her struggles, her redemption and triumph. It's about love lost and found, and the eternal spirit of a scorned, yet determined woman. After reading the first chapter, you will be hooked. I cannot get this book out of my mind. Absolutely incredible.

Memorable Saga,
This review is from: Inheritance (Mass Market Paperback)
I discovered this enthralling book in high school, and it ranked right up there with the equally (at the time) riveting Flowers in the Attic series, and Eileen Goudge's Garden of Lies. Unlike the former two, Inheritance is a plausible tale, one adult readers can enjoy. This story is for readers who relish family sagas, secrets, depictions of wealth and power, and a little romance, thrown in the mix, though the romance is mainly with the surroundings. It is Judith Michael's best novel, in my opinion, and the only one I've reread. Characters--and not just the main ones--and places are vividly brought to life.

A High School student's thoughts on Inheritance,

This review is from: Inheritance (Mass Market Paperback)
I started reading this book that I found in my High School library so I could reach my 500 page goal and get an A in my English class. Immediately after starting reading it, the characters came alive to me. Never in my 15 years of life had I ever read something with that kind of plot, with all of the intrique, romance, betrayel and feeling like you know that characters.I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in a good plot, romance, intrique, betrayel and a womans fight for what she deserves.

Couldn't Finish It!,
This review is from: Inheritance (Mass Market Paperback)
I am greatly surprised by the positive reviews this book generated. It started off with an interesting premise, a girl from the wrong side of the tracks trying to rise to the top of the business world, but the novel sagged midway inexplicably. The suspense and interest for me stopped. The characters became dislikable. I found it hard to generate sympathy for pampered, whiny twenty something year-olds. Yes, Laura was treated unfairly by being stripped of her inheritance, but her and Clay reacted to this as if it were a major catastrophe. Clay is a spoiled brat while Laura is cold and uninteresting. Why Paul and Wex find this bland woman so fascinating is beyond me. It also became tiresome to read about the characters' outlandishly wealthy, privileged lives. They seemed to live a fake, superficial existence. The writing team of Judith Michael succeeded in doing only one thing with this novel. They made the lives of the rich and famous look incredibly shallow.
