2.0 out of 5 stars How disappointing
Too bad! I agree with the other two-star reviewer's assessment of this as a rushed, first-draft product that comes nowhere close to the author's other books. I've read them all within the space of two weeks, with this being the last. Had I read this first I would not have bothered with any of the author's other books, which would have been a loss. The characters are...

5.0 out of 5 stars Another winner for Tamera Alexander!, February 18, 2009
This review is from: The Inheritance (Women of Faith Fiction) (Paperback)
I've read all Tamera Alexander's books, so when I saw this one on the shelf, I snatched it up. I do believe it's her best yet. McKenna Ashton and her young brother set off for Copper Creek, Colorado after losing everything because of her brother's gambling debts.
She is an expert saddle maker and finds work doing just that but Robert continues to be a problem. She meets US Marshall Wyatt Caradon, who knows from experience that Robert needs tough love. McKenna longs to feel free from all the anxieties she suffers when Robert gets into one scrape after another. Wyatt has already fallen for her, but she is determined not to care for him.
I won't spoil the plot for those who haven't read it, but the theme of God's love and His protection are awesome. The prayer Wyatt prays over Robert, "Break him, Lord, until he's wholly Thine" is one all Christians should pray daily. If we can stand it.
Don't miss this book for you will be blessed for reading it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Alexander fast becoming best historical writer today!!!, April 8, 2009
This review is from: The Inheritance (Women of Faith Fiction) (Paperback)
I just finished the Inheritance by Tamera Alexander and had to share with you how much I loved it. I'm not surprised how well it was written, since I've read other books by this author. I wasn't even surprised how the author took me right into the setting and left me there for the whole story. Nope. Wasn't surprised at all. Not since Alexander has become my favorite new Historical fiction writer. This newest book was the icing on the cake. Something I love about her writing is that it's historical without being unrealistic.

Sometimes I read historicals and think, really? They really acted like that. Never once did anything improper or out of character. It seems untrue to human nature to think that just because a christian person was born in the 1800's they never did anything "unchristian" or questionable. Tamera paints a real picture. A human picture. I could easily imagine the premise of this book happening. I love her stories so much, I wish they'd make them into a television series. I'd watch it. :)

Overall, rich, vivid characters, and a beautiful setting. Throw in the faith element and you have a wonderful read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Read with a Message, March 22, 2009
This review is from: The Inheritance (Women of Faith Fiction) (Paperback)
I thoroughly enjoyed "The Inheritance". There were so many angles to the "inheritance" concept and it was great to read a well-written, well-researched book that encourages the reader (me) to sit back and also take note of the inheritance I have received through my walk of faith in Christ Jesus. Learning brokenness, faith, and rest through troubled times ... an inheritance I can certainly stand to receive!

Tamera Alexander's writing style was pleasant reading. I was pleased with the storyline, the relationships drew me in and made putting the book down difficult, and I loved the balance she obtained by McKenna's severe independance yet desperate need for DEPENDANCE. Wyatt is the perfect hero and is a great picture of a Godly leader.

If I had to critique anything, I'd say it was too short. And, I don't mean that patronizingly. I would have loved to have the book a little thicker and a little longer so Tamera Alexander could have spread the story even further =0)

Totally worth the money to add this to your library!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another winner!, March 2, 2009
This review is from: The Inheritance (Women of Faith Fiction) (Paperback)
Tamera Alexander has done it again with The Inheritance. McKenna and Wyatt became as real to me as dear friends. I didn't want their story to end, and was surprised at every turn by the things they said and did. I loved this story and its themes of trust and redemption. I can't wait for the next novel by Tamera Alexander.

4.0 out of 5 stars My first Tamera Alexander book, February 28, 2009
By
This review is from: The Inheritance (Women of Faith Fiction) (Paperback)
"The Inheritance" is the first book in a new series called "Women of Faith Series" published by Thomas Nelson and written by Tamera Alexander.
Agnes "McKenna" Ashford and her brother Robert have lost everything and due to Robert's rebellious behavior, they must journey west to begin anew. They are to live with their cousin and her family but when they arrive, things aren't what they were supposed to be. McKenna's cousin is dying and on her deathbed, she makes McKenna promise to raise her daughter Emma and run the ranch. Unable to refuse her, McKenna vows to make Emma her own and ventures out to make a new home for the three of them. Between Robert's misbehavior and a certain banker informing her that if she does not make payments on the ranch, they must foreclose. On top of all that, McKenna must deal with the attentions of a US Marshall, Wyatt Caradon. When her cousin-in-law's brother suddenly shows up to claim the ranch and Emma as his own and Robert spins out of control and gets in trouble with the law, McKenna questions why God is permitting all these horrible things to happen.
This is my first Tamera Alexander book, but I know for a fact it won't be my last. When I'm able I plan to read her other works. McKenna is a strong, independent woman of faith in a difficult situation. What caught my attention the most was her relationship with her brother Robert. It seems as though she is in a lose-lose situation. She can't very well abandon him in his greatest time of need, but when she mothers him too much he only rebels more. The romance between her and Wyatt, while expected it is also adorable. And her unique friendship with Chin Mei, a Chinese woman, only adds to the story. I certainly hope that this book will have a sequel.

4.0 out of 5 stars A rich, mostly satisfying story, August 23, 2011

This review is from: The Inheritance (Women of Faith Fiction) (Paperback)
A surprisingly rich and satisfying story! Not filled with the usual shoot-em up, hair raising wild west antics that make most westerns exciting, this story centers around the real life emotional hardships that were so prevalent during the settlement of the 19th century West.

McKenna Ashford arrives in Colorado with her angry, rebellious younger brother after the death of their parents and loss of everything. Her plans to stay with her cousin and family until she can get on her feet are abruptly cut short when sickness and fever run rampant, leaving her with another mouth to feed and little way to make ends meet. McKenna's struggles, her determination and perseverance in the face of the hard, unforgiving life that was the West, is written with such depth and understanding that I actually shed tears right along with the heroine as she worked to keep a farm running, a brother from rashly ruining everything and the forces that be from destroying them all.

My only complaint was the weird way all the events were reconciled. All the major story lines we follow through the book, from her relationship to Marshal Caradon, to what becomes of her home, to the climax involving her brother's fate, are ALL just explained after the fact. We are not allowed to experience ANY of those events as they happen! It's like climbing, climbing, climbing only to be blindfolded once at the top then told what everything looks like. A sad letdown to an otherwise 5 star book

5.0 out of 5 stars Christian Romance at it's best!, March 15, 2011
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I agree with the reviewer that said Wyatt's prayer is one we all should pray but oh how hard it is. However, it is this prayer that is repeated several times that is the main theme for The Inheritance. This story is riveting from the beginning. I love the description of the Marshall as he rides into the story self assured, very capable, at one with horse and rifle. You can just feel and see the strength and at the same time, the vulneralbility of the man. He has both integrity and humility along with the toughness needed for his job. You can sense the loneliness and incompleteness. He is willing to share the mistakes of his past to help both the heroine and her brother grow. As he and our heroine actually meet he shows respect while at the same time acceptance for her as a lady and as a woman. It is difficult watching them both struggle with their feelings and misunderstandings but then, anything worth having is worth working and waiting for. So this story will keep you turning page after page until you are satisfied with the plausible ending. This is the first book I have read by this author and if you like Christian Romance, I highly recommend her. I will be adding her to my favorite authors list.

4.0 out of 5 stars Claiming an Inheritance can be Costly!, February 25, 2011
McKenna Ashford has spent most of her life trying to be a mother to her younger brother, Robert. After a series of disasters, McKenna and Robert journey to Copper Creek, Colorado to be near their cousin, Janie Talbot. McKenna's hopes for a bright future are suddenly crushed by the death of Janie and her husband. Per Janie's request, McKenna agrees to care for Emma, Janie's daughter, and inherits their homestead. As she begins life in Copper Creek, she encounters the intriguing and somewhat dangerous U.S. Marshal Wyatt Caradon. Trying to keep her distance from Marshal Caradon, moonlighting as an entrepreneur, parenting a rebellious brother, and keeping the farm together proves to be more than McKenna can handle. When it seems everything has fallen apart and McKenna is about to lose a precious treasure, will she have the strength and faith to do what is necessary?

The Inheritance carries on Tamera Alexander's tradition of integrating history, romance, and the personal issues of her characters. This is the second book I've read by Alexander and I find that in her stories, it seems the plot is coming to a close when she suddenly throws in an unexpected element or situation that tests the character's resolve and keeps the story moving. I thought the plot flowed well and the characters were authentic. It was interesting how Alexander incorporated the Chinese culture of the time and area with her story. I felt like Alexander used the book to advance awareness of the pain and maladies caused by the Chinese practice of binding young girls' feet. Overall, The Inheritance is an entertaining read and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys historical romances.
