Book Description

My name is Rachel Clancy. Thirty years before I was born, the world ended. Today is my sixteenth birthday. Today I will go Upwards to fight the monsters and, statistically speaking, I won’t be coming back—at least not still living.

Initiation is the story of sixteen year old Rachel Clancy, born with a specific set of genes that let her fight monsters, she has trained her entire life to kill Vampires and Werewolves. Knowing since birth what her destiny would be has not made the onslaught of emotions she faces as she journey Upwards any easier. It doesn’t help that her father is drunk and her best friend just doesn’t get ‘it.’

Rachel isn’t prepared for the level of deception she faces, and before long she will find herself on a quest she is in no way prepared to handle. What happens next will alter not only Rachel’s life but the lives of everyone she knows. She will learn beyond a shadow of a doubt that sometimes the monsters we know are worse than the ones we don’t and that love can surprise us when it comes from somewhere we never anticipated it.

If she lives, she will be a Warrior. If she doesn’t, no one will ever remember her name.

4.0 out of 5 stars fantastic April 6, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Rachel Clancy lives in an underground habitat where she was born. Rachel is a Warrior that will be sent above ground on her sixteenth birthday to fight the monsters that destroyed everything and caused Armageddon. Rachel lives with her father who has been drunk everyday since her mother was killed by vampires. Rachel goes to a school where you learn to fight the monsters and to protect the humans that live in the habitat.

When Rachel receives her assignment on her sixteenth birthday she finds out that she will have to go above ground on her own, all because the leader of the habitat has it out for her because of a mistake her father made years ago. She is sent to an outpost to check on the other warriors that used to be there but no one has heard from in over a month. She she takes off on her journey she is kidnapped by werewolves who claim to be different then the monsters, and falls in love with the alphas son Jason.

What will Rachel have to do to survive a revenge that is more then what anyone is expecting. What will Rachel do to be with the one she loves. What will Rachel do when she finds out everything she knows and has grown up believing is a lie. What will Rachel do when she has to say goodbye to everything that she has know since she was born?

Rachel Clancy is the type of girl that I would like to be friends with. She is a very developed character, which you only see develop more as the novel progresses. The story line is original and very well created. The author makes you live out the scenes with Rachel. I really did find myself being caught up in this great story and not wanting to stop reading. There are twists and turns and you never know what is going to happen next. There are tear filled moments that leave you thinking you may cry with Rachel. This book comes highly recommended by me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it! May 5, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Rachel Clancy is a Warrior, but due to her father's past transgressions, her initiation into the Warrior life happened alone. She had to fight off Vampires and Werewolves by herself, but stumbled upon many unexpected things during her time aboveground, including her first love.

Initiation combines dystopian, post-apocalyptic and paranormal elements in a well-written young adult novel. Rebecca Royce remains true to her character's voice throughout and the plot is far from predictable. The emotional depth (which is very important to me as a reader) of this novel made it easy to invest my time in the characters.

I look forward to reading more from Rebecca Royce, especially the sequel to Initiation, Driven.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good story gone bad, then gone good again August 5, 2013
By Latwa
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book started off really good. I was interested in the world, and Rachel's circumstances and excited to uncover secrets. This book started off as a post apocalyptic YA book, and turned into the dumbest romance novel ever. It was like 2 separate books. The first part of the book demanded that you take Rachel seriously as a character. She has emotional depth and is pretty well rounded.

*****SPOILER ALERT******
Then she meets this werewolf and he is immediately in love quickly followed by her being in love. Not "like", but love for the rest of my life love. Talk about P.O.'ed!! It was like how freaking corny is this? Why is this in the book? After that, nothing felt serious about the story. The end of the story seemed to get back on track with this being a serious story.

Also it was very strange that she was such an outcast and unnoticed before, and then SUDDENLY every male on the planet Earth is madly in love with her.

I have to say that this is potentially a great story. I am tempted to by the next book because I want to know what happens. The book wasn't horrible. There were things in the story that I found ridiculous, but the story was pretty ok. For the price it is an ok read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't pass this one up! July 23, 2013

I downloaded the sample of this book and a few others. I like to read and see how interested I am before purchasing. When I read the first few pages I almost decided to pass on this book. I wasn't sure if I like the whole concept of a warrior style book. But it is not what you think! I read a few more pages and I was hooked. My emotions were up and down. I was so conflicted during the ending. The book could of ended on the last page. It kept your wondering what could happen. Glad to see a second book is out. Rachel is a very likable and believable character. Not down right gorgeous or perfect, that was a nice change in a book. I felt Jason was a little pushy, and almost childish, but other then that I liked him, especially when he was serious. The joking between the two was a nice change during the book. I think at 16 it would be tough to find that special someone, it will be interesting to see what happens in the next book. I only point that out, because Rachel seems to blush easily in front of any cute guy. Great book, I don't think you would be disappointed in it at all!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Beginning Series November 11, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This was one of those books I had sitting in my kindle constantly overlooking it for no reason. When I finally sat down and read it on Friday, yes in one day, I was overwhelmed. It was such a great story. The first couple chapters were a bit slow for me, but they were necessary for you to see the background of how the humans were living. Once Rachel goes up that elevator, the story too off for me. This was a great post apocalyptic story of how the world we know becomes over run with monsters. Teenagers being sent out on their sixteenth birthday to fight as long as they are born with the gift. The gift to be able to fight. In Initiation, Rachel is just turning sixteen and about to go up on her first mission. Having been trained since a young age, Rachel soon learns that she is more than just special, she is the daughter of one of strongest warriors. Too bad for her that her parents left her some baggage and a bad rep. Rachel is forced on her first mission alone, but as if that isn't bad enough, Rachel's mission doesn't go as planned. Rachel's journey has just begun and she is the key to bringing all the darkness into the light. I hope you enjoy Initiation as much as I did. Enjoy.
