Just What I Needed,
By LASH (east coast) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Ink: The Not-Just-Skin-Deep Guide to Getting a Tattoo (Mass Market Paperback)
I bought this book and read it cover to cover before I got my first tattoo (three weeks ago at age 35). I wanted a tattoo, but I had two problems: I am afraid of needles and I like to know what is going to go on - no surprises.
This book answered all my questions about health, safety, cost, tipping, and the million other things that I was unsure of going into this new territory. Having read this book (about a week before I got my tattoo) enabled me to have a relaxing and enjoyable first tattoo experience. I was able to walk in to the tattoo shop already knowing how it would happen, step by step. I would highly reccommend this book to anyone who is considering their first tattoo. The information on choosing a design and location are very helpful (in addition to all the things I mentioned above). I would say this is a 'must read', especially if you are nervous about the whole process. This takes the 'mystery' out of getting a tattoo. In addition, the information about the history of tattooing, and tattooing in other cultures is quite interesting. There is also a good bibliography and list of helpful websites in the back of the book. Even though I already got the tattoo, I still pick up the book and read sections of it. It is interesting to read now that I have been inked. I'm sure that I will read it again before getting my next tattoo. (I'm already working on a couple of ideas!)

I have several tattoos, including large ones that required multiple sittings. I would like to think I know pretty much all there is to know about getting a tattoo, but man, I learned so much from this book! It is well written, easy to read and full of funny facts and trivia that I had to share with anyone that would listen! I would suggest this book to anyone, from someone looking to get their first tattoo to veteran tattooees and even tattooists. (Okay, I am making up words I think...) GREAT BOOK!

The Ultimate in Preparation,

I bought this book together with the Tattoo Encyclopedia. Even though they're by the same author, they're very different! This one is absolutely everything you need to know when you actually get your tattoo - from how much it will cost to how to keep from getting an infection. It's totally readable and fun and is packed with factoids and pictures! Use the Tattoo Encyclopedia first and then this one.

The Coolest Introduction,
This review is from: Ink: The Not-Just-Skin-Deep Guide to Getting a Tattoo (Mass Market Paperback)
Although I already have a tattoo, this book has all of the information I *wish* I had when I got my first one! There's design information, health information, how to find a good tattoo artist, and it's crammed full of facts and trivia. Really clever and really informative at the same time. Just wish it had been around a few years ago.

I ordered this book before getting my first tattoo, but I really didn't read most of it after getting my ink. I found this book to be very helpful and informative.
Out of all of the tattoo books that I ordered, this is the only one that had the helpful information that I was looking for. This book covers everything from tattoo history and historic figures with tattoos, to tattoo etiquette and even the what-you-need-to-know-about-your-tattooist. This book is a must have for anyone seriously considering getting a tattoo.

This book takes you from figuring out what to put in your skin, to how it gets in your skin, what your body does to the ink, and how to care for your tattoo after. And, the history bits were fascinating, and the inside lingo, and how to attend a tattoo convention, and, how people may look at you differently, and where to put your tattoo... oh, heck, this is THE book to read about getting a tattoo. It's a great read even if you're just hooked on the TV tattoo dramas. (Kat ROCKS!)

Great Gift (so I kept it),
By Great Timing "Timing is Everything" (Portland, OR) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Ink: The Not-Just-Skin-Deep Guide to Getting a Tattoo (Mass Market Paperback)
The first thing I did was read all the trivia stuff sprinkled throughout the book. It's packed with all kinds of little information points. I couldn't stop myself. Then I looked at all the pictures and started reading all the cool advice columns. I bought it as a gift for somebody who likes tattoos but ended up keeping it and then having to buy another! I've been thinking about getting a tattoo for a long time and this book is just what I needed to really get me going. Maybe that's why I picked it up in the first place? My friend really liked their copy too, by the way.

An excellent first book about tattooing,
By Batman's Kiss (Fillmore, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Ink: The Not-Just-Skin-Deep Guide to Getting a Tattoo (Mass Market Paperback)
I had just gotten my first tattoo when I noticed something strange inside of me shifting and wanted to understand. This book was so excellent as a first book in understanding the history, how ink gets into the demis layer of the skin, how to choose a tattoo image and artist, tattoo symbology basics (this author wrote a whole other book on it, but I like this condenced version), aftercare, and much more.
Although I have purchased other books that delve into one region or another of tattooing, I still refer back to this book all the time. I would definitely reccomend this book to anyone considering a tattoo, or who has recently been tattooed for the first time. Even old-timers who wish to explain to others or those wishing to understand this cultural phenomenon will appreciate this book. Most excellent! Thanks to amazon for a great deal on it also!

Good Primer on the Tattooing Process,
This review is from: Ink: The Not-Just-Skin-Deep Guide to Getting a Tattoo (Mass Market Paperback)
This book does an adequate job of explaining the overall process of pursuing a tattoo, from a vague concept to a piece of permanent art embedded in your dermis.
If you're looking for a lot of design examples, this is not the book for you. However, there is a chapter in this book devoted to the "method" of picking a design; narrowing down your choices, where to look for examples, and other tips that are very useful for someone who is completely in the dark in regards to a 'final' concept. This book also contains a lot of tattoo trivia and jargain which will appeal to those who are interested in tatoo history/terminology/etc.

I am a 44 yr old mom, I'll be getting my first tattoo tomorrow night. I'm excited, still a little nervous, but a lot better informed about what will be happening since I read this book. I'd suggest it to anyone about to get a tattoo or just in the planning stages.
