Editorial Reviews

2013 release, the fourth album from the San Diego-based Funk/Jazz group and their first in six years. Recorded at Elgonix Sound labs and mixed by Grammy Award winning producer/engineer Mickey Petralia (Beck, Peached, Eels, Flight of the Conchords) the album is a mixture of influences from the five very distinct members of the group.

Greyboy Allstars are one of those bands that always surprise me that they never made anymore albums. Reason being is that on two separate occasions they were extremely important to the forward progression of funk. When their second albumTown Called Earth) came out, they were contributing new music to a massive funk music revival that provided the rhythmically healthy stimulant to counteract some of the dreary alternative/trip hop of that era. By the time of their third What Happened to Television?,their music was a reminder of the looseness and liberating flavors of exciting new instrumental funk could be to a sad and frightened music loving public in Dick Chaney's America. Happily it didn't take them another decade to release this album. And it came during a time when yet another possible funk revival, this time more on its own terms is on the horizon.

The album opener "Profundo Grosso" is an enormously swelling mass of organ, bass and guitar. Not quite cinematic funk. But a strong grove on the very rhythmically grand end-not exactly tight. On the other hand "Bitch Inside","Old Crow","Bomb Pop","Better Get A Jump On" and "Breaking Blood" are in fact all rather more tighter in terms of the groove-full alternately of chunky wah wah of course and some deep, gurgling organ/electric piano parts. "Multiplier" is one of my personal favorites here-starting with a bright organ riff and going into this slick live instrumental groove that isn't overly produced yet has an instrumental flair that is also extremely glamorous.

Less funky than previous albums. More R&B singing and soul tunes. This is not necessarily bad but it is not what established GB as the premier boogaloo funk band. Couple of grooves but just an inconsistent effort.

I have all of the cds that have been released by the Greyboy Allstars. I love the fact that each is unique and this latest release continues the trend. There is more use of keyboard and guitar with Inland Emperor and the jazz/funk goodness flows as usual.
I believe there will be a cd release party/concert in July in southern California - see you there.

But, aren't you sad about selling the greatest recording on earth? No. When you listen once it permanently eliminates your ability to feel sad about anything ever again. Even for little puppies who are afraid to walk down the stairs, because the stairs...they're so big, and they're so little. Puppies who are young, but have already discovered the world to be a cold, unforgiving place. But you won't give a shit about it because you'll be on your awesome bean bag chair, rockin DRE headphones and living the dream.
